‘Shogun’ and ‘Kamen Rider’ actress Yoko Shimada dies at 69

According to Variety, Japanese actress Yoko Shimada died last Monday, best known for starring in the miniseries “Shogun” (1981). She was 69 and died of multiple organ failure due to colorectal cancer, as reported by Japanese media.

Shimada was born in 1953 and started his career at 17 with the series ‘Osanazuma’ (1970). The following year his name was already popular on Japanese television, present in several works until 1975 such as ‘Castelo de Areia’ (1974), ‘The Family’ (1974-75) and ‘I Am a Cat’ (1975).

However, it was in ‘Shogun’ that a real milestone in her career was born precisely because she was the only actress in the production among so many men. In the miniseries, she played Mariko and opposite Richard Chamberlain.

Yoko learned a lot of English while filming, which earned her other roles in the United States and Canada, such as “Marked for Death” (1995) and “The Fight” (1995).

The actress even won her first and only Golden Globe of her career for her performance in the project. She also received an Emmy Award nomination for Actress in a Miniseries or TV Movie. Who won, however, was Vanessa Redgrave for Playing for Time.
