According to The Wrap, Russell Crowe (“Uncontrollable Fury”) will star in the horror movie “The Pope’s Exorcist,” which will be directed by Julius Avery (“Operation Overlord”).
The film, developed by Screen Gems, will be based on the true story of exorcist Father Gabriele Amorth, “a legendary Italian priest who performed over 100,000 exorcisms for the Vatican.”
The most recent version of the script, written by Evan Spiliotopoulos, will feature revisions by Chuck MacLean. The original plot was written by Chester Hastings and R. Dean McCreary.
Previously, Ángel Gómez (“Voices”) was to direct production, but dropped the project for unknown reasons.
It should be remembered that William Friedkin, director of the classic “The Exorcist”, released a documentary about the story of Father Gabriele Amorth, entitled “The Devil and Father Amorth”.
