Review | Chloe: The Psychological Thriller Miniseries Is Wonderful, But May Disappoint With Its Ending

on

Exploring the underworld of social networks, more specifically Instagram, Alice Seabright constructs the mini-series Chloé as a dubious psychological thriller in front of the public. Although she has a bigger purpose in her plot, the Sex Education creator also tries to deepen the reflection on the alleged perfection constantly sold publicly in well-crafted and “spontaneously” posed photos – the opposite of life. unglamorous and sometimes even unglamorous. . even suffered existing in offline mode. And Amazon Prime Video’s original production even manages to deliver that, but with some small caveats along the way.

In the plot, Becky Green is an isolated young woman who divides her time between caring for her sick mother – diagnosed with cancer – and her obsession with the Instagram of former childhood best friend Chloe, with who she hasn’t been in touch with for years. Upon learning of his sudden death, Becky decides to infiltrate her circle of friends, which leads her to adopt a new identity, as she gradually begins to assume the perfect life that once belonged to her old friend. And in six episodes, Seabright invites the public into the disturbing vision of the protagonist, brilliantly lived by Erin Doherty (The Crown), while we also follow her at every doubtful step.

What makes Chloe such an empowering series is how Doherty quickly pulls her into her double life as Becky and Sasha. In a powerful and complex performance, she takes us in a sudden way, fixes our attention in her clear eyes and motivates us to want to follow her movements in each scene. Acting alongside a very good supporting cast, she knows how to work with dynamism and charisma with the other characters, but always keeping our attention on her body language – which sometimes gives a latent restlessness, sometimes gives an extreme need for control of self emotions.

Always alternating in his performances, Doherty brings two characters to life in one and makes the episodes flow nimbly. With her acting combined with a well-crafted script, Chloé knows how to conquer the audience with each chapter by precisely exploring the narrative tension in an increasing way. And as Becky tries to come to terms with a life that doesn’t belong to her, we’re also faced with our take on the character: is she a villain or a girl with questionable decisions? This constant questioning makes Chloe a bittersweet experience, in a love-hate and understanding relationship with this young woman who, even if she makes unorthodox decisions, has her admirable and justifiable reasons.

Have fun watching:

With a twist that takes us a bit by surprise – even if it becomes noticeable early in its final episode – the psychological thriller series delivers a good story. Developing its secondary characters in an efficient and rapid manner, the production still makes its small reflections on the illusions that we create in the face of the social life shared on networks such as Instagram, Facebook and TikTok – although none of these considerations takes root deep in our minds. But with an uncreative ending, Chloe may even disappoint some fans of the genre who are looking for more iconic endings. But regardless, the original BCC and Amazon Prime Video is an excellent and electrifying journey that is definitely worth a marathon. Just control your expectations.
