Netflix Review | Night Nurse: Jessica Chastain and Eddie Redmayne in Spectacular True Crime Thriller

Published

on

An ever-growing global POP trend, the true crime genre has migrated from the underworld of podcast playlists to Netflix screens, in an endless succession of miniseries and feature documentaries that explore some of the world’s most heinous crimes. registered in the United States. United States and beyond in several other countries. Once reaching only a small portion of the Investigation Discovery channel’s cable TV subscribers, the format has now become a true alternative entertainment movement, where viewers revel in haunting tales that explore the human spirit. at its worst. But while productions like Dahmer: An American Cannibal can be overly graphic, to the point of being seen as a glorification of the serial killer (which it isn’t), The Night Nurse chronicles the barbarism of Charlie Cullen from the least likely way, but not the least. , light… so much more important: that of the heroine who revealed the true face of a wolf in sheep’s clothing.

The translation of the title “The Good Nurse” into The Night Nurse could not be more erroneous. Complete but extremely erroneous, the Portuguese version directs our eyes and attention to Cullen’s crimes. But the truth is that the Netflix original, which premiered at the Toronto Film Festival and is based on the book The Night Nurse: A True Story of Medicine, Madness and Murder (Charles Graeber), isn’t talked about so much. . Subverting the true crime genre in the right way – without falling into the same stereotypical clichés reproduced in previous productions – the thriller based on true events explores the story of nurse Amy Loughren, who lived side by side with the serial killer who silently killed his patients with insulin overdoses. Migrating from one hospital to another under suspicious circumstances, he managed to perpetuate his crimes for another 16 years.

And from the perspective of this good nurse, we see the duality of Charles, a seemingly upright and generous man who got her through her worst times, but killed one of her patients on the night shift almost daily. And directed by Tobias Lindholm and written by Krysty Wilson-Cairns, the trajectory of America’s deadliest serial killer becomes an inspiring and heartwarming story about an ordinary woman who, in the midst of all her struggles and dilemmas as a single mother who works, was able to end a cycle of violence that even the management of some of the largest hospitals in the country could not. Inviting the viewer to a poignant experience that deprives itself of the trivialization of violence, the filmmaker plays with our imagination and shows the crimes of the murderer always from the angle of speculation.

Have fun watching:

Abusing the impressive and powerful performance of Eddie Redmayne as Cullen, The Night Nurse is a thriller that loses nothing to other feature films in the genre that abuse graphics. With the Oscar-winning actor in an internalized and introspective performance, we are gifted with his powerful versatility. The star exudes talent, skill and wit in a natural and chilling way, as he’s in a slight hybrid performance between a softer, more nurturing version – the one that helps heal Amy – and her demeanor suspect who escapes within moments. On the other hand, Oscar-winning actress Jessica Chastain gives us an excellent performance, more serene and tired, which depicts the emotional state in which the nurse found herself at the height of her friendship with the serial killer.

With extras who are nurses in real life, the production portrays the medical community from a correct angle, reproducing the operational didactics of the professionals in the field, as a way of honoring them for their services to society as well. And instead of falling into the clichés of the true crime genre, in which the serial killer leaves small traces of his behavior even when his true identity is still a mystery, Tobias stays in the realistic realm of always showing Charlie through the Amy’s perspective – that he only saw through the kindness of his care for her.

This strategy of the filmmaker makes the experience even more palpable for the public, because it places us in the same position as Amy, like those who will only see the true face of evil in its excellent climax. With a more optimistic outlook that values the protagonist as the capeless hero in real life, The Night Nurse is another such gem released by Netflix. Mesmerizing for its strategic atmosphere of mystery and with careful direction that takes advantage of the shadows of the night, contrasted with artificial light, the thriller is an impeccable biopic made for true crime junkies or not.
