Plants are used in interior design for countless reasons. They’re not just pretty additions but elements that can boost your productivity, impact your mood, improve your sleep, and clean the air. And there’s more! According to Feng Shui principles, welcoming plants into your house can also attract positive energy and good fortune.
Plants have the power to transform the aesthetics of a space and invite the energy of nature into your home. Feng Shui principles also state that houseplants can heal and nourish the homeowner’s energy. But they can attain these benefits only if they correctly welcome plants in their houses.
Suppose you’re new to the whole Feng Shui thing; you might be surprised that it implies more than arranging the furniture and items in your house in a particular way to encourage good luck and positive energy. Something as simple as picking a couple of flowers and placing them in the right spots can play a big role in balancing the space’s energy.
Here are some things to remember before welcoming a new plant baby home.
What are your goals?
Everything from floor layout to plant selection should be decided according to the kind of balance you want to bring to your life. So you need to identify your goals and decide if you want to find your happiness, reduce stress, or improve your finances. What are your life goals? Just as it is for everyone else, it’s crucial to seek balance amongst the several things that pull at you, whether you’re looking for ways to grow your business, find pleasure, or improve your love relationship. Before heading to the local plant nursery, write at least three things you want to attract and enhance in the following period.
The Feng Shui of welcoming plants indoors
Bringing live, fresh plants inside the house strengthens the energy of a specific Feng Shui element, the wood. Feng Shui principles present the wood as an element that stands for new beginnings, family, and wealth. Suppose your house is overfilled with metal elements; decorating with plants can help you adjust the balance of the elements. Feng Shui believes that the wood element brings the vital energy of action and growth into a house and can inspire the inhabitants to be more flexible, kind, and compassionate. In addition, green, the colour specific to plants, is often associated with healing.
According to Feng Shui, more isn’t better for plants because too many wood elements inside a small room can hinder your thinking process. You need to balance the elements surrounding you to feel and think clearly. Creating a jungle inside your house will overrule the space and prevent you from feeling calm. Feng Shui houses are organised in a way that invites people in.
Which plants boost your house’s Feng Shui?
Not all plants are equal when it comes to their power to boost your house’s Feng Shui, and you need to consider some factors when picking new additions to ensure they enable you to reach your particular goals. The principles of Feng Shui tell homeowners to look for the following three categories.
Air purifying
You most likely know that one of the main benefits plants have when brought inside is that they improve air quality. The Boston Fern and Areca Palm are great choices because they’re known for cleaning the air. One study concluded that the Areca Palm is one of the most effective plants at removing carbon dioxide from the air.
Protective energy
The Mother-in-law’s tongue or Snake Plant is an excellent choice as a first plant to bring inside the house because it has high protective energy. It’s also one of the easiest plants to care for because it requires minimum maintenance. If you want to use Snake Plants to decorate your living room or patio, buy appropriate planters because these plants tend to grow quite large.
Luck/money bringers
The Jade succulent is also known under the name Money Plant and is great for any room where you want to create the impression of comfort due to its rounded leaves. Bamboo is also a luck bringer because it represents adaptability and growth. In Feng Shui, the number of bamboo stalks used to decorate a room has a symbolic meaning, and you should pay attention to this aspect. Use two stalks if you want to improve your love life and three if you want to nourish happiness.
According to Feng Shui principles, Monstera is another popular plant when decorating because it represents relationships, happiness, and love. If you have some planters on wheels you like to move from inside to outside when the warm season comes, grow some Birkin plants, pothos plants, and heartleaf philodendrons because they improve harmony, happiness, and good energy in any household.
How many plants should you buy?
Now that you know what to look for when shopping for plants at the local nursery and made a list of the kinds of plants you should purchase according to your goals, it’s time to decide how many to buy. If you’re just starting your plant parenthood, you can get a single one. Rest assured, you’ll benefit plenty from it. However, if you want to get more than one to improve the house’s aesthetic, then you need to create a plan to figure out where to place each of them. As mentioned earlier, Feng Shui doesn’t promote the idea of crowding your house with plants, so you should look for ways to prune down the collection.
Placing more than five plants in a room is a no-no in Feng Shui, and greenery is supposed to transform the space into a peaceful sanctuary. Also, having too many plants that serve different purposes can end up killing each other’s energies.
Final words
Boosting your house’s Feng Shui doesn’t stop with bringing green babies home and putting them in their places. Proper plant care and maintenance are also paramount to reap their benefits.
