Robert KingMarch is the month we celebrate women’s history, with International Women’s Day being celebrated on March 8. And it is clear that, in honor of the importance they bring to each of the sectors of society – and their journeys full of obstacles and lack of opportunities – CinePOP would not fail to honor the great names of the entertainment industry.
For this, we have separated twelve directors who must be known, whether in the cinema or on television. From Ava DuVernay to Vera Egito, we also take the opportunity to discuss her most famous projects.

Main works: Selma, Olhos que Condden
Ava DuVernay became the first black female director to be nominated for an Oscar for her incredible and underrated work on “Selma”. Always bringing representativeness to his acclaimed works, DuVernay was also responsible for the powerful “ Eyes that Condemn ” miniseries, which crudely portrays the politics and corruption behind the American justice system, and is the main name of the “ New Gods ” to come.

Main works: Encounters and inadequacies, Maria Antonieta
Daughter of Eleanor and Francis Ford Coppola, Sofia Coppola found her artistic identity shortly after her film debut, “The Virgin Suicides”. Since then he has built an honorable career with the titles ‘Encontros e Miscontros’, which earned him an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay and a nomination for Best Director, and ‘Maria Antonieta’, an iconic historical drama which mixes present and past in a colorful story.

Before venturing into directing, Greta Gerwig had a solid career as a screenwriter and actress. Proving her versatility, she directed the acclaimed coming-of-age drama “ Lady Bird, ” which garnered her numerous Oscar nominations and, most recently, the incredible adaptation “ Adorable Women, ” which has been on the list of best feature films of several press consortia. For the reinterpretation, starring Saoirse Ronan, Gerwig was called up in the category of best adapted screenplay.
CHLOÉ ZHAO
Main works: Songs My Brothers Taught Me, Nomadland
After making her debut on the independent circuit with the famous “Songs My Brothers Taught Me”, Chloe Zhao repeats the feat with award-winning favorite “Nomadland”. Starring Frances McDormand, the feature won the Best Picture award at the 2021 Golden Globe and earned Zhao the Best Director award (the first Asian woman to achieve the feat and second overall to win the statuette). She is also responsible for directing “The Eternals,” a long-awaited production from Marvel Studios.
Main works: Póstumo, A Farewell
If you’ve never heard of Lulu Wang, you might not know what you’re missing. One of the most prominent figures in Chinese-American culture, the director is known for her work in “Posthumus” and, primarily, in the dramatic comedy “A Farewell”, starring Awkwafina. Taking on the world and various decorations for his original perspective on family dramas, Wang has his name associated with the most diverse genres of the entertainment scene, including music videos and documentaries.
Main works: Scandal, Uma Noite em Miami
Regina King is one of the most prolific and important names today and has enjoyed success in the most diverse artistic spheres, both as an actress and as a director, screenwriter and producer. In addition to his multiple forays into series like “ Scandal, ” “ Insecure, ” and “ Greenleaf, ” King made his cinematic debut in directing with the much-acclaimed “ Night in Miami, ” which has already won several awards.
CÉLINE SCIAMMA
Main works: Tomboy, Portrait of a young woman on fire
Known for challenging gender conventions and the role of women in society, Céline Sciamma continues to shock audiences with incredible approaches to the female relationship, like gender fluidity in ‘Tomboy’ and lesbian romance in ‘ Portrait of a Young Woman on Fire ” (one of the best works of recent decades). She is also a respected activist who fights to end the gender gap in film and television.
AGNES VARDA

It is almost a crime to speak of Agnes Varda in one paragraph. The famous and legendary French filmmaker is responsible for some of the most revolutionary titles in cinema, such as “ Cléo de 5 à 7 ” and “ Les deux visages du bonheur ”, getting involved in the French new wave of l industry and considered by many to be one of the representatives of cultural feminism, focusing on themes that were generally carried by strong and complex characters.

Lana and Lilly Wachowski are two of the most well-known names and owners of critically acclaimed and beloved titles today. From their 1999 debut with “ The Matrix ” to the prodigious and underrated series “ Sense8 ”, the Wachowskis are not only big names in the female presence in film and television, but also activists for the fight for LGBTQ + rights, mainly because they are trans women.

Vera Egito is a pioneer in many areas when it comes to the reach of Brazilian entertainment. His most famous feature film, Amores Urbanos, debuted at the Miami International Film Festival just to receive universal recognition and win the hearts of audiences. In 2020, he made history directing the first nationwide series starring a non-binary character with HBO’s “ Todxs Nós ”, also taking the opportunity to speak openly about sexual orientation, gender. , identity, color and youth.
