Jon Kasdan, showrunner of the series ‘Willow’, commented in a recent interview on a possible return of Val Kilmer as Madmartigan.
This new “Willow” is the direct sequel to the fantasy film of the same name, originally released in 1988, and two of the three protagonists have already been confirmed in production for the Disney+ series. Warwick Davis will reprise the role of Willow, while Joanne Whalley will once again play Sorsha. Val Kilmer has yet to have his name attached to the show to return as Madmartigan, however.
Kasdan spoke about the first season of the fantasy series, and gave the public hope for a possible return of Madmartigan, during a press conference.
“Madmartigan is still here. I have had many conversations with everyone involved and our feeling is that he is there to be found, should the day ever come. I think Warwick and I would love to see him take that sword back” , Kasdan said.
He added: “As we were telling a story that had so many young characters and everyone was searching for their identity, the search for Madmartigan and the question of what happened to him was central to the story we were telling. We knew it would fit into this [nova] fundamentally looking, to see where he was and what he’s become and what he’s given up, especially for Ruby’s character, Kit, and Dempsey’s character, Airk, so they can do good. This question follows throughout the season.
Take the time to watch:
“We had a lot of ideas about ways to wrap up his story and ways to leave it open. One thing that happened, because Val himself couldn’t come to Wales and work with us, was that we added this texture from a friend of Madmartigan who might give us some hints about his location and deepen the mystery of what happened to him. in a way that really amplified the story we were already telling. It was very enriching and gave us the opportunity to add a whole new element that we didn’t expect at the show”, he concludes.
