We’ve ranked ALL film and TV adaptations of Neil Gaiman’s works

That Neil Gaiman is one of the best authors not only of his generation, but in the history of entertainment, is not new to anyone. And, in general, a good part of his beautiful writings have been skillfully adapted for the big screen or for the small screens – like the beloved fantasy adventure “Stardust – The mystery of the star” or the creepy animation in stop-motion ‘Coraline and the secret world’. .

Now, with the recent arrival of ‘Sandman’ to the Netflix catalog, it’s time to remember Gaiman’s incredible career and the consequent reinterpretations of his film and television projects – and we guarantee that the series in question captured our hearts to capture the essence of the original comics.

With this in mind, we have decided to classify all the productions of the novelist and comic book author who have won an audiovisual adaptation.

Check out our list below and let us know what your favorite title is:

Based on Gaiman’s eponymous short story, the 2017 film “How to Talk to Girls at Parties” fell short of the novelist’s story. Received mixed reviews by pundits, the plot follows three friends who dedicate their lives to punk, whether they embody the ideals of the movement or simply attend gigs by fledgling bands. It’s while leaving one of these shows that Enn (Alex Sharp), Jonesy (Eddie-Joe Robinson), and John (Ethan Lawrence) find a strange mansion, with colored lights illuminating the windows. Believing it to be another party thrown by Boadicea (Nicole Kidman), they enter the place and find a very strange group of people there, divided into colonies and with predefined attitudes. Among them is Zan (Elle Fanning), who feels trapped in the status quo and sees in Enn the chance to finally change her destiny.

Have fun watching:

The novel “American Gods” is one of the most powerful ever written by Gaiman and draws on adult fantasy to discuss the struggle between the Old Gods and New Gods for world and human supremacy. Adapted for the small screen in 2017 under the name “American Gods”, the work had a very good start, but it declined considerably with the departure of several actors and racism scandals – which is why the third and last season seems to have lost all will to exist.

5.LUCIFER (2016 – 2021)

“Lucifer” rose to the level of one of the most successful series on Netflix (formerly Fox) and, to this day, continues to win fans around the world. Broken down into six seasons, the production is based on characters created by Gaiman, Sam Kieth and Mike Dringenberg – taken from “The Sandman” comics and revived under DC Comics’ Vertigo imprint. The adaptation, starring Tom Ellis, centers on Lucifer Morningstar, who leaves hell and moves to Los Angeles, where he runs a nightclub called Lux and becomes a consultant for the police department. local. In addition to Ellis, the cast also includes Lauren German, Kevin Alejandro, DB Woodsie, Lesley-Ann Brandt and others.

4. GOOD OMEN (2019 – PRESENT)

In 1990, Gaiman again ventured into comedy fantasy with “Good Omens,” penning the acclaimed novel alongside Pratchett. Almost thirty years later, Amazon Studios and BBC Studios have acquired the intellectual rights to the work and brought the acclaimed ‘Beautiful Omens’ mini-series to life. Starring Michael Sheen and David Tennant, the production merges many themes and characters from Christian mythology and has as its main narrative focus the spectacular and hilarious adventures of the angel Aziraphale and the demon Crowley – who transcend their own bonds when the apocalypse is announced. It was so successful that almost two years later Amazon announced a second season of the show.

3. THE SAND MAN (2022 – PRESENT)

After such a long wait, ‘Sandman’ emerged from creative limbo and got a more than charming adaptation. The main idea of the new Netflix series (one of the best titles of the year, without a doubt) is clear and follows a straight path, with a lot of potential to take our breath away and introduce us to a gem of the contemporary audiovisual, driven by the shock between leniency and the unknown. Here, the performances of a cast that includes Tom Sturridge, Gwendoline Christie, Jenna Coleman, David Thewlis and many more are the focus of our attention, as well as the script, technical and artistic advancements have been chosen with surprising care. .

2. STARDUST – THE MYSTERY OF THE STAR (2007)

‘Stardust: Mystery of the Star’ is and always will be one of the best adaptations of the incredible and twisted mythology created by Neil Gaiman. What could become another failure of the vast branch of fantasy fiction and its respective adaptations for the cinema actually gave us a spark of hope that things could really work, keeping the originality of the content of the work and creating a totally unique and exciting audiovisual cosmos. It’s no surprise that, despite some special effects that weren’t that sophisticated at the time, the narrative unfolding in Stronghold is memorable and delights people of all ages.

‘Coraline and the Secret World’ delighted audiences when it hit theaters in 2009 – and remains the finest adaptation of Gaiman’s writings. Here, the creative genius of the author is linked to the incredible cinematic passion of Henry Selick, a director who had already lent his talents to the incredible stop-motion animation “The strange world of Jack”. Of course, Gaiman hadn’t written the novel with the intention of releasing it to broadcast media, which makes the film’s naturalness and complex organism even more surprising. There is a remarkable respect from the director for the novelist and a mutuality of thought that seeps between the subtle lines of the production.
