South Korea and the United States of America launched four surface-to-surface missiles in the East China Sea, following the provocation yesterday, Tuesday October 4, by North Korea, which launched a missile which flew over the sky of Japan and ended up in the sea.
The Tokyo authorities had sounded the alarm and had the citizens housed in underground shelters for their safety.
The launches were carried out from the Gangneung base, the closest to the border with North Korea. Some videos show a large fire raging right at this base, while other sources speak of multiple explosions.
South Korean ballistic missile malfunction
The South Korean armed forces have admitted that a ballistic missile malfunctioned and fell to the ground during the exercise with the United States. The roar of the explosion and the resulting fire caused panic among the residents of the coastal town of Gangneung, who feared being attacked by North Korea. South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said Wednesday (October 5) that no one was injured.
The army said it was investigating the causes of the “abnormal flight” of the missile. Earlier, the South Korean General Staff announced that four Army Tactical MissileSystem missiles and another Hyumoo-2 were successfully launched during the joint exercises in response to North Korea’s provocation. In fact, Pyongyang conducted the first ballistic test in eight months yesterday, launching an IRBM missile that traveled about 4,600 kilometers and flew over Japan.
