Producer Morgan Creek, who has released films such as “ Domain: Prequela of the Exorcist, ” “ Ace Ventura, ” “ Claw of Champions, ” and “ The Last of the Mohicans, ” confirmed today he was working on a new movie in the “The Exorcist” franchise.
“We are very pleased to confirm the development of the rebirth of beloved franchises, such as The Exorcist and Ace Ventura. During COVID, the public is passionate and thrilled to have loved the characters brought back with new stories, ”Morgan Creek said in a statement.
David Gordon Green (“Halloween“) is in talks to direct the sequel, which will be produced by Blumhouse Productions in partnership with Morgan Creek.
The website says the next project will follow similar steps to “Halloween,” with the goal of relaunching the franchise and incorporating elements of the source material without being a direct reboot.
The film is slated for release in 2022.
The plot will focus on Regan McNeil’s (Linda Blair) granddaughter and her struggle to get rid of the demon Pazuzu, which has plagued the family since he was kicked out of Regan’s body by Father Damien Karras (Jason Miller ).
Therefore, the new movie must skip “The Exorcist II: The Heretic” (1977) and “The Exorcist III” (1990) to tell a story directly related to the original.

As the project is still in its early stages, updates are expected to be released in the coming months.
Directed by William Friedkin and starring Linda Blair, the first feature film follows a twelve-year-old girl who behaves in completely frightening ways. In this way, her mother seeks the help of a priest, who is also a psychiatrist, and he comes to the conclusion that the girl is possessed by the demon. He then calls on a second priest, a specialist in exorcism, to try to free the young girl from this terrible possession.
The original franchise yielded four films, in addition to an “alternative” prequel, titled “Estate”. Recently, FOX launched a series that took place in the same universe as the original film, which ran for 2 seasons.
