If you haven’t watched all six episodes of Ms. Marvel, avoid this article as it contains spoilers.
Filled with controversy since the leaks began, the Ms. Marvel had everything to be unanimous, but the paths chosen ended up dividing fans. However, if there’s one thing everyone can agree on, it’s that the pacing of the series was hard to follow. The early chapters kept an interesting Disney+ teen series feel, which they won right away. However, when the plot started to explore more of Kamala Khan’s past, everything else was left out, and the new characters helping her weren’t as interesting as the ones that were originally introduced.
But before we talk about the negatives, the series’ protagonist, Iman Vellani, who brings Kamala/Ms. Wonder, it was a find. His game is very safe and brings a very welcome excitement to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. She plays Kamala Khan so easily, it seems like an easy job. And since it was her first major work, it will be difficult to dissociate herself from the character, who makes her a reference for the MCU for years to come. It is impossible to see the girl on the screen and not be enchanted by her talent and charisma.
Have fun watching:
And since the production cast her as an X-Men, not a member of the Inhumans, you can expect the girl to make many more appearances in the years to come. In addition to The Marvels, it is very likely that she will appear in at least four other films or series, since the studio features so many child/young heroes in its productions.
The supporting cast is also very good. The supporting cast also overflow with charisma and have a core of their own which is very interesting, when the series decides to pay attention to them, of course. Also, the relationship between Kamala and Bruno is wonderful to see. The duo boasts a colossal alchemy that is eye-popping. Their work truly makes audiences believe that they’ve been best friends for years and years.
The family issue that involves the Khan’s life in the United States, facing prejudice and their own struggle to keep their beliefs and traditions alive, is very interesting. At first, this difference between them and their daughter is quite intense – even shocking at times – but it brings some very good conflict to the plot.
Following this imprint of cultural conflict of a Kamala who grew up in the United States, but who must maintain family traditions, the series adapts cultural elements that link the heroism of the protagonist to her roots. So the lightning bolt symbol and the character’s name – which were just generic homages to Captain Marvel in the comics – became a declension of Kamala’s name in her original language, she gained a related cloth to Pakistani warriors, and her magnificent hero costume was made by her mother after accepting her as she is. Similarly, Ms. Marvel was created by Bruno himself, giving him a connection to his friends.
Unfortunately, despite the promising start, the series was lost in the final stretch with a confusing time travel plot and new villains, the Djinn. Okay, Marvel doesn’t have a history of so many well-developed or interesting big-screen villains, but this Djinn problem was Malekith-level crap. Their arc was unbearably anticlimactic, only serving to take away screen time and try to bring a sense of danger to the journey of self-discovery – to no avail. Everything that impregnates them is unbearable, without being able to maintain a minimum of interest for the public. And you know what’s worse? They come out of nowhere and end up nowhere. Their impact on the universe and the series itself is practically nil, as the ultimate threat isn’t even them.
Kamala’s powers, which caused controversy when changed, initially did not compromise. The problem is that she rarely used them. And in the last episode, when she starts using them at full capacity, there was a nuisance because of the CGI. Maybe if they kept the body-stretching powers, it would have been even worse. But you can’t accept that a production with a film budget makes scenes as contrived as these. M/s. Marvel is the warning that Marvel must understand to finally realize that quality is better than quantity. Because they risk jeopardizing future good stories if they keep this video game from the 2000s.
Another frustration concerns development. If they wanted to work Ms. Marvel as a mutant, why leave this reveal for the show’s last scene completely hasty? I mean, the reveal could be done at the last minute without any problem, but Bruno would work to investigate the matter, creating a mystery in the air. The way they brought it, it was just thrown away.
As for the ark in Pakistan, it is very representative, but even in it there is a complicated development. The scenes from the family’s past had some interesting elements that were shown superficially. Kamala’s great-grandmother’s passion for her human great-grandfather had so much potential, only they chose to bring simple, quick scenes to address the uninteresting origin of the Djinn. A love story that has a woman denying her species to stay on a strange planet with a human is far more interesting than a group of banished, irrelevant ETs who want to open a portal back home.
There’s also a connection to the Kree, linking Ms. Marvel to Captain Marvel (Brie Larson), which is very interesting and should make for a very interesting story in The Marvels. Too bad the character only appears in post-credits, but it’s still enough to link the two and create some angst for the film. Not to mention that the Captain seemed to be investigating the Ten Rings of Shang-Chi, so maybe there are even more connections in these upcoming projects.
Anyway, taking a general review of the series, it seems that the story would be better suited in a film of just over 2 hours. There’s also a feeling that if they kept the teenage vibe from the start, the outcome would be better. Still, thanks to the talent of young Iman Vellani and the intrinsic quality of Ms. Marvel, who is a very good character in all media, it is very likely that millions of people who did not know the character fell in love and are now fans. That is to say, this is a series with all the errors of current Marvel, but which also brings together some of the best quality of the studio. Unfortunately, successes don’t exempt mistakes, which makes Ms. Marvel an average series.
