Reception of COP27 leaders Charles and Sunak at Buckingham Palace

King Charles hosts a reception to discuss the fight against climate change as world leaders prepare for the UN climate summit, COP27. The sovereign will not be able to take part in the next important summit in person, but has decided to welcome the main representatives at an official reception at Buckingham Palace.

The event takes place just two days before the start of COP27. For the occasion, King Charles invited more than 200 people, including representatives of major NGOs and business leaders. The objective is to facilitate exchanges focused on sustainable growth and the progress of COP26.

As major British newspapers report, more than 200 representatives gathered at Buckingham Palace, including politicians and activists. Besides British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, US climate envoy John Kerry stands out. King Charles is internationally known for his interest in the climate issue, but he was banned from attending COP27 in person.

The UN conference will begin this Sunday. The host of the important summit on climate issues will be Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt. When former Prime Minister Liz Truss took office, he immediately made it known that he did not consider it appropriate for Carlo to participate. A choice that did not please the new sovereign, who has a long-standing interest in environmental issues and participated in COP26 in Glasgow last year.

Buckingham Palace, however, said the King and Truss “with mutual respect and friendship have agreed that the King will not be present”. A spokesman for Sunak said on Thursday that “if the prime minister had been in office earlier, the situation might have been different.” Meanwhile, in the political turmoil that has swept across the UK, King Charles maintained his resolve to do something by hosting the reception. Buckingham Palace said this is a situation that will “certainly facilitate discussion on sustainable growth, on the progress made by COP26 in Glasgow and on the collective and continued efforts to combat climate change”.
