Putting canned tuna in the fridge: here’s what can happen

Published

on

The university student is not without tuna pasta, tuna sandwich, tuna and mayonnaise, in short, anything to do with tuna. In fact, canned tuna is an excellent ally for those who have little time (and I would add little money), since only this food is a good protein concentrate and is used almost everywhere in the world. As proof, I want to cite research conducted in 2009 by a famous French university, which claims that 50% of Americans have at least three cans of tuna in the pantry.

But we Italians are certainly no less so and consume just as much canned tuna. Therefore, you will certainly be very happy to know that although it is still a canned product, therefore not fresh but prepackaged, it is still of good quality, not harmful to our health (obviously if it is not abused). Yes, it is better to choose it plain or, on the contrary, drain it well, check the label carefully before buying it and favor products in glass packaging, which contain as few ingredients as possible, possibly only tuna, oil, salt.

Now that we have clarified the question of healthy or not, let’s focus on its conservation. We usually keep it in the pantry, along with other products. Let’s see if this is the right method or not. It would be ideal to keep our stocks of tuna away from heat sources, so that we do not store the boxes in wall units above the stove or in direct sunlight, as heat has a negative effect on the product, causing it to deteriorate much faster. It is ideal to place it in a cupboard or in a sideboard in a shaded position, in a sheltered and well closed place.

Experts also advise consumers to buy tuna in large packs, since the boxes, more often than not, do not contain the whole steak but the remains, to understand each other, the remains of other processes. Now is the time to dispel a myth that you don’t have to put tuna in the fridge when it’s still closed, but when it’s open, it should be done. If the packaging is tin, uneaten tuna remains should be removed, placed in a suitable food storage container and stored in the refrigerator for up to one or two days. After that, if they are not eaten, they must necessarily be thrown away. As for the glass jar, you can instead leave the tuna in its packaging.
