For those who still doubted the new “Panic” would be a sequel, directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett confirmed the information in an interview with Cinema Blend.
When asked if the feature would reset the franchise, Gillett explained that they decided to follow up with a streak to praise the “characters who are the legacy of the saga”: Neve Campbell as Sidney Prescott , David Arquette as Dewey Riley, Courteney Cox as Gale Weathers and Marley Shelton as Deputy Judy Hicks.
“There’s a lot of weight in these four films that we’ve already had. And we have four characters who survived. I call them “inherited characters”. They survived and people want more stories of these characters told.
He also argued that the legacy built by Wes Craven and Kevin Williamson, the creators of the franchise, cannot be reshaped.
“There is a level of love and respect for the world that Wes [Craven] and Kevin [Williamson] created. We couldn’t change that, and the only way to make a new movie was to tie it back to what was done before. And you can’t have something new without making references to the above. So we decided to continue and not to remodel [os filmes]. Respect the honor [os longas anteriores]. ”
The first film in the franchise debuted in 1996 and became an instant, groundbreaking classic that mixed elements of slasher terror with cinematic metalanguage. Directed by Wes Craven and scripted by Kevin Williamson, the plot focused on a masked serial killer known as Ghostface, who used slogans and creepy knowledge of genre productions to pursue his victims.
Together, the four iterations have raised more than $ 608 million at the global box office.
Paramount Pictures is launching “Panic” in Brazil on January 13, 2022, the day before the North American debut.
