Matthew Perry apologizes after controversial statement about Keanu Reeves; To understand!

Actor Matthew Perry was embroiled in a major controversy recently after Variety published an excerpt from his memoir, titled “Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing.”

On one page of the book, the Chandler of the series ‘Friends’ said that he regretted that Keanu Reeves (‘Matrix’) was alive when several of his talented friends died, such as River Phoenix (‘Stand By Me’), Chris Farley (‘A Heavy Ninja’) and Heath Ledger (‘Batman – The Dark Knight’).

In an interview with Deadline, Perry said it was an innocent and negligent statement, arguing that Reeves was a random name that came to mind as he reflected on the losses.

“I’m actually a huge Keanu fan. I just picked a random name, it was my mistake. I was careless and I apologize. I should have used my own name instead” , did he declare.

The idea that Reeves’ name was chosen at random seems odd, as he is specifically mentioned in several passages in the book as an actor who “still walks among us” while the aforementioned stars are no longer among the living.

After the apology, Perry avoided raising the issue again and did not elaborate on what prompted him to write the statement.

Slated for release on November 1, the book addresses several of the actor’s traumas, such as the period during which he almost lost his life due to his addiction to alcohol and drugs, in 2018.

At the time, media reported that Perry had undergone abdominal surgery to repair a gastrointestinal perforation.

The truth, however, was that his colon had burst due to overuse of opioids. He had surgery but spent two weeks in a coma, staying in hospital for five months and using a colostomy bag for nine months.

“The doctors told my family that I had a 2% chance of living. I was put on a machine called ECMO, which breathes instead of your heart and lungs. No one can survive this,” the actor revealed.

In total, Perry underwent 14 stomach surgeries, and the life-threatening experience put him on the road to recovery.

“My therapist said to me, ‘Next time you think about taking oxycontin, think about what it’s like to have a colostomy bag for the rest of your life,'” he recalls . “It was a big moment for me, because I didn’t want to take oxycontin anymore.”

Although he hasn’t revealed how long he’s been sober, the actor said he’s been to rehab 15 times; he currently describes himself as a “healthy guy”, saying he finally feels ready to tell the story of the drug addiction that nearly took his life.
