Mallori Johnson will make her television debut as protagonist Dana, an aspiring young black woman who tries to start over by moving to Los Angeles. Struggling with epileptic seizures, Dana is haunted by her past – in a very real and visceral way: she is violently drawn into the past, oscillating between the present and the slave past of the 19th century, where she meets her ancestors.

Micah Stock, Ryan Kwanten, Gayle Rankin, Austin Smith, Antoinette Crowe-Legacy and David Alexander Kaplan are among the cast.
Janicza Bravo, known for her acclaimed work on “Zola,” joins as executive producer and director.
In an interview with Deadline, Bravo commented on his enthusiasm for the project, saying he had a personal connection to Butler’s writings:
“I first read ‘Kindred’ 20 years ago. I was in college. I had never seen myself in such a world. And certainly not in its center. What looked like a portrait of an invisible woman turned out to be a powerful embrace of our relationship to history and how it can bring us closer to the future,” she said.
Branden Jacobs-Jenkins (“Watchmen”) wrote the screenplay. Courtney Lee-Mitchell, Darren Aronofsky, Joe Weisberg and Joel Fields are also joining as executive producers.
