Kevin Spacey pleaded not guilty in a London court last Thursday (14). The actor is accused of committing four cases of sexual assault against three men, stemming from incidents that allegedly took place between 2005 and 2013 in London and Gloucestershire, England.
According to CBS News, Spacey also pleaded not guilty to a rape charge, in which he allegedly caused a person to engage in penetrative sexual activity without consent. The whistleblowers are currently between 30 and 40 years old.
Because of all this, Kevin Spacey lost a role in a film about the life of Genghis Khan, sold to investors and distributors at the Cannes Film Festival in May. The historical drama ‘1242: Gateway to the West’ reportedly tells the story of a Hungarian clergyman, played by Spacey, who tries to stop the founder of the Mongol Empire from invading his territory.
Bill Chamberlain, the film’s producer, told Variety that he replaced the actor after receiving the charges in British courts. On Thursday, Spacey appeared in person before the Central Criminal Court of England and Wales in London. The judge said a new trial would begin on June 6, 2023, the British Press Association news agency reported, and granted Spacey a continued, unconditional bail.
He was not asked to file a formal appeal at the hearing, but his lawyer said he “strongly denies any criminality in this case”. The judge said a further hearing will take place early next year. The actor had previously appeared in Westminster Magistrates Court on June 16 to face the charges. Acknowledging his cooperation in the legal process, the prosecution demanded that the actor be held in the city at large, but on bail until the next hearing.
