Is Rihanna on path to EGOT status?

Fans have wondered if Rihanna is on track to an EGOT after she was nominated for best song at the 2023 Oscars. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever features the singer’s original song “Lift Me Up,” which has earned her a nomination for the 95th Academy Award. After headlining the 2023 Super Bowl with a legendary performance, Rihanna has been nominated for an Oscar and will perform at the event. Checking in to see whether this artist has what it takes to win EGOT.

Rihanna Has 9 Grammy Awards

Following her meteoric rise to stardom in the middle of the 2000s, Rihanna has become one of the most recognisable figures in modern pop music. This was mirrored in 2008 with the release of Rihanna and Jay-collaborative Z’s album Umbrella. There were a total of 10 weeks that this song was number one. As of its release, it held the record for the longest number-one single in the United States in the twenty-first century.

Rihanna’s breakthrough hit, “Umbrella,” earned her a Grammy. She won the award for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration, but Amy Winehouse’s Rehab was named Record of the Year.

The second of Rihanna’s two Grammys is for a song that features Jay-Z. With Jay-Z and Kanye West, she co-wrote the 2010 hit “Run This Town,” which won the Grammy for Best Rap Performance/Song. They also won that year for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration.

Rihanna’s “Only Girl,” released in 2011, won “Best Dance Recording” (In The World). One year later, she contributed to the winning team for All Of The Lights, a rap/sung collaboration. She received the Best Short Form Music Video award for “We Found Love” in 2013, and the Best Urban Contemporary Album award for “Unapologetic” the following year.

Her 2015 collaboration with Eminem on The Monster also earned her a Grammy for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration. This division was also where she triumphed three years later. Working together with Kendrick Lamar on the song “Loyalty” earned the two Grammy winners yet another nomination.

Is Rihanna closer to EGOT status?

Sure, a few people out there are mystified by the concept of the EGOT club. One may only be considered an EGOT winner if they have also taken home hardware from the Emmys, Grammys, Oscars, and Tonys. Jennifer Hudson, Viola Davis, John Legend, Whoopi Goldberg, and Andrew Lloyd Webber are just some of the personalities that have achieved EGOT status over the years.

However, Rihanna is still a long way from being an EGOT. The singer has only been nominated for the 2023 Academy Awards and won a Grammy. The Work performer still has to win an Emmy, a Tony, and an Oscar to complete the EGOT. The musician has been branching out into acting with roles in films like Ocean’s 8, Home, Battleship, and Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, so it’s not impossible.

The Super Bowl performance and Oscar nominations are just Rihanna’s latest highlights in what has otherwise been a banner year. The singer has been busy expanding her cosmetics and clothing lines since the release of her previous album, 2016’s Anti. Even when everything was happening, Rihanna welcomed a newborn boy into the world and is expecting her second child.
