‘Halloween Ends’ Streaming Strategy Draws Criticism From ‘Freaky’ Director

Via social media, director Christopher Landon of ‘Freaky: In the Body of a Killer’ has criticized studios for making new movies immediately available on streaming services and therefore preventing success financing of productions on the theatrical circuit – directly referring to the method’s impact on the opening weekend of “Halloween Ends”.

After all, the franchise’s third installment disappointed in launch revenue, bringing in just $41.2 million (nearly $14 million less than initial projections and the trilogy’s smallest debut).

In a series of tweets, Landon wrote, “I sense another rant coming: today is the ‘Day and Date’ launch strategy for ‘Halloween Ends.’ Stop doing that. Please. Do not work. Studios: Stop betting with filmmakers and their films to try to favor their streaming services. It happened to me on ‘Freaky’ and it destroyed us.”

According to Deadline, the sequel’s big-screen performance was hampered by its simultaneous release on Peacock’s streaming service. Universal Pictures, however, revealed that “Halloween Ends” broke records, becoming the biggest debut in the platform’s history.

Other factors that may have hurt the film are the strong retention of horror ‘Sorria’, which only suffered a -33% drop in its third weekend, and the negative reception from critics. and audiences towards the film – in addition to only earning an approval rating of 41% on Rotten Tomatoes, the film received a C rating from viewers on CinemaScore.

Despite this, the film is far from a failure. Budgeted at $30 million, ‘Halloween Ends’ is set to become another profitable chapter in the franchise – despite the disappointing performance for the promised conclusion to one of the genre’s most popular sagas today.
