Before Grogu succeeded as Baby Yoda in “The Mandalorian“, the film “Gremlins” (1984) had already introduced a cute character with pointy ears, Gizmo.
For those who don’t remember, the plot revolves around adorable creatures, but they end up turning into destructive monsters that terrorize a town on Christmas Eve.
And it looks like the film’s director, Joe Dante, wasn’t happy with the popularity of the little green alien in the ‘Star Wars‘-inspired series.
During an interview with the San Francisco Chronicle, the filmmaker said that the creators of “The Mandalorian” took advantage of Gizmo’s image to create Grogu’s look.
“I think the key to the longevity of the ‘Gremlins’ movies is Gizmo, who is basically like a baby. Which of course brings me to Baby Yoda, who was completely and openly copied from my movie, sure.
In turn, Gizmo was created as a comic version of Mogwai demons from Chinese culture. Baby Yoda, on the other hand, is nothing more than a miniature of Master Yoda, who was created a year before the premiere of “Gremlins.”
