In 2023, we will say goodbye to this method of payment that many Italians have disputed. Here’s how much you can save
Farewell to Rai Canon. But not quite. It is the partial novelty that will arrive in 2023, as official sources already confirm these days. The unpopular tax for Italian citizens will be suspended, but only partially.

In fact, the European Union has been pushing for a more transparent law on bills and taxes charged to citizens of member states. This leads to a mandatory abolition of the Rai Fee on electricity bills.
From next year, the Rai tax will no longer be present in the bills, as established by the Renzi government from 2016. In this case, the tax had fallen to 90 euros from the previous annual 113 euros . But it can no longer be requested and paid in this way.
Rai fees on bills and more: is it really convenient for Italians?
Energy bills, already very expensive in recent months due to inflation and the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, should therefore drop in tariffs thanks to the farewell of the Rai fee in the bill.
In the meantime, Codacons continue to call for the total abolition of the RAI royalty, just as some politicians are pushing that button. According to consumer associations, the time has now come to abandon this tax.
According to some opinions, Rai could finance itself by other means, like other broadcasters: increase in social networks and television on demand, more advertising of the commercial TV type and privatization of spaces. But there are those who disagree.

Riccardo Laganà, director of administration at RAI, recently expressed his opposition to the abolition of the license fee: “People are shooting with wet powder, demanding the abolition of the radio and television license fee, copying badly the tactic already adopted in 2016 when the fee was lowered from 113 euros to 90. In this case there will be a saving for each family of 24 cents per day, with which you can barely buy a slice of bread. on the other hand many benefits for the future government”.
There would therefore be little savings and the risk that public television ends up with others increases the money missing from the license fee in this case. In 2023 we will understand what fate this tax will have.
