In the midst of modern design’s hustle and bustle, Bilan Liu is a shining star of ingenuity and artistry. As a designer whose roots can be traced back to the tranquil scenery of Chibi, Hubei province, China, Bilan’s design career stands as a proof that creativity and cultural heritage can be transformative.
Ever since she was young, Bilan’s passion for the world has been obvious. Equipped with a manual film camera, she set out on a journey of exploration, crafting the moments of life in deliberately composed photographs. The storytelling through visuals that she developed during this time gave her solid ground when she became a designer and shaped her into a designer with a keen eye for detail and artistic commitment.
Bilan’s road to graphic design, however, was a journey of curiosity, perseverance, and appreciation. Activated by the boundless opportunities of creative expression, she entered industrial design, trying to join the process of making dreams come true. Interestingly, she was surprised by a subject that introduced her to the concept of graphic design when she was in her formative years. The idea that design is not just about creating objects, but also about conveying ideas and emotions is what made her shift towards graphic design. Bilan stated, ‘My journey into graphic design began in my sophomore year at university, within the engaging environment of a university club. It was here that I received my first commercial project, offered by the club president who saw potential in my abilities. Tasked with designing a series of posters, my objective was to effectively communicate our recent club activities and articulate our identity as a group’.
As a graphic designer Bilan’s style is characterized by a mixture of minimalism and cultural richness that creates a harmonious balance. This is as a result of her background as a photographer and her Chinese descent, her designs feature an element of classic and depth, which makes an explorer of the public to make a journey that crosses the borders and the languages.
One of Bilan’s most notable projects to date has been her partnership with Juicy. Juicy is a juice firm looking to revitalize its brand identity. Bilan rejuvenated the company’s visual language through a careful design approach, resulting in a unified and appealing brand experience that resonated with a wide range of audiences. The project’s success not only cemented Bilan’s image as a visionary designer, but also reinforced her belief in design’s transformative capacity to achieve significant change. ‘The most memorable and rewarding experience in my career thus far was my collaboration with Juicy Juicy, a juice company, where I had the opportunity to redesign and refresh their visual identity brand. This project stands out not just for the creative challenge it presented, but for the significant impact it had on the company’s brand image and their relationship with their customers’, said Bilan.
Bilan has garnered multiple honors for her remarkable work, including the renowned MUSE Award and NYX Award. These achievements demonstrate her unwavering commitment to quality and pushing the frontiers of design innovation. Beyond her professional accomplishments, Bilan is profoundly committed to using design as a vehicle for social impact. She earned a master’s degree in interactive design from the California College of the Arts and is committed to addressing important societal challenges through intelligent and sympathetic design solutions. Whether working with Fortune 500 organizations, startups, or non-profits, Bilan approaches each project with a sense of purpose and a desire to make a positive difference in the world.
