King Charles III will be crowned at Westminster Abbey by the Archbishop of Canterbury on May 6, 2023. Many were willing to bet he would choose to set the coronation on June 3, to pay tribute to Queen Elizabeth, whose 71 years since the big event would take place on June 2. But apparently the new ruler chose to symbolically refer to another English monarch.
For the Windsors, however, next May 6 will become a day to be fixed in the calendar of official royal family celebrations. The Royal Family, in fact, is very keen to remember birthdays like this and Elizabeth II herself has always celebrated her birthdays as Queen with great fanfare.

But this date, even if few know it, already has a special meaning for the family. On this day, in fact, the king, responsible for founding one of the most famous royal houses in the world, ascended the throne more than a century ago. It is therefore towards him that King Charles III seems to cast a look of admiration.
The king who inspired Charles III has a lot in common with him
When it comes to the English royal family, coincidences do not exist and the date of the coronation of King Charles III is no exception. May 6 therefore cannot be linked to any other king in British history. This is George V, who became king on May 6, 1910. He succeeded his father, King Edward VII, after a series of vicissitudes which suddenly brought him to the throne. King George V is known as the founder of the Windsor dynasty.

Indeed, at the beginning of his reign, the royal house was called Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. But in 1917, with World War I raging, King George V decided to drop the German-influenced name and hire one that sounded more “English.” On July 17, 1917, he issued a royal proclamation changing the name of his dynasty from Saxe-Coburg-Gotha to Windsor. Probably therefore that King Charles intends to pay homage to his parent, but there could also be other reasons.

Like him, indeed, George V was attacked because of his private life. He had married Mary Teck, but popular rumors said that he was bigamous and already married to another woman, known in Malta during his youth. He had behind him a long apprenticeship as a prince engaged in military life, but he found himself inheriting the crown after the death of his elder brother, who suddenly disappeared. From his father he inherited a kingdom that was going through a very turbulent phase and, despite many travels and devotion to his people, he did not achieve the success of subsequent rulers.
