‘Brutal Nights’, ‘Fresh’, ‘Bloody Wedding’, ‘Freaky’ and more Halloween TIPS from Star+

In exactly two days, the world will be able to celebrate a new Halloween – known here in Brazil as Halloween and celebrated on October 31. But for aficionados of horror and the whole theme – even if it’s just a chilling simulacrum – the date celebrations start at the beginning of the month and last every day of October. To help you, dear reader, to get fully in the mood for this appointment that we love so much, we continue our series of articles with advice on films and series that lend themselves very well to being watched and celebrated. on this occasion of scares and goosebumps, but also a lot of fun. Continuing this year’s column, we now bring you tips from Disney’s second streaming property for its more adult films: Star+. Here, however, the proposal is different from the others in this column. This time we opted for more recent films that have just been released on the platform, some even this year, with new premieres in Brazil. Discover the 10 films we have selected for you below.

One of the most acclaimed horror films of the year, Barbarian (original title of the feature film) arrives in Brazil directly on the Star+ platform exclusively, bypassing theaters. With a little independent production soul, the film didn’t win the hype of other horror feature films of the year – such as Halloween Ends, Smile or even Orphan 2, but what sold this Brutal Nights , it’s big word of mouth and critical acclaim. . The marketing campaign was also very creative, placing night vision cameras inside theaters, capturing audience reaction beyond the fear of seeing the film. Another positive point, the unpredictability of the scenario, full of twists and turns. In the plot, a young woman (Georgina Campbell) arrives at an Airbnb house she rented only to find that the place already had an occupant (Bill Skarsgard). The two are forced to spend the night there – she is very scared. But that will turn out to be the least of your problems.

Another gem of its kind tucked away in the Star+ collection, Fresh arrived on the platform shortly after its screening at the prestigious Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. It is also a film full of surprises and twists, which presents a real spectacle of the duo of protagonists: the promising young Daisy Edgar-Jones and Sebastian Stan. The film begins as an irreverent and scathing satire of the world of modern relationships, showing how hard it is to find a soul mate these days, or just someone unpresentable. Jones plays Noa, the disillusioned girl. When she finally seems to have found the man of her dreams, in the person of surgeon Steve (Stan), things quickly turn into a nightmare.

Enjoy watching:

Another movie released later this year exclusively on the Star+ platform. By buying Fox, Disney has truly touched a gold mine, in possession of one of the most traditional and successful studios in Hollywood. This tip here you should know well, as it’s one of the most talked about, most praised and fan-loved movies of 2022 – which also became one of the most popular of the year. If you still need an incentive to watch it, here’s our advice – or if you’ve seen it, it’s worth rewatching. As the name clearly suggests, this is another movie in the Predator franchise, about an intergalactic hunter coming on safari to Earth. It is, however, the most original and creative film in the series since its release in 1987. This time the action takes place in the 1700s and features a tribe of the Comanche nation, considered the best hunters of the time. In this storyline, Naru (Amber Midthunder) attempts to break down barriers and redefine the role of women in her tribe, who were forbidden from hunting alongside men at the time. She wants to prove her worth, and for that she will come across a more than scary creature.

One of the most anticipated horror films of the past year, Antlers (in the original) is a dark fable that touches on the folklore of Native American legends. The gimmick here is director Scott Cooper, who has prestigious and even Oscar-winning films on his resume, see Crazy Heart, All for Justice and Crime Alliance. It’s always nice to see a director of such prestige change his genre and decide to work in another style he’s not used to, thus increasing his creative scope. And Cooper pulls off his first foray into terror very well. Here, a schoolteacher (Keri Russell) and her sheriff brother (Jesse Plemons) begin to worry about one of her little students (Jeremy T. Thomas) and his situation at home. It all ties directly to the legend of the Wendigo, a mythological creature believed by ancient indigenous people to be an evil spirit that is a mixture of man, nature, and animals. The production is by Guillermo del Toro.

The proposal in our lists of tips for halloween is to have a suggestion for everyone and for all tastes. And although the date is synonymous with fear, fear and terror, not everyone has a taste for it, but many still want to enjoy the date with something, let’s say, more accessible. While some prefer “creepy make-believe” productions, with comedic elements, the so-called “terrify”, others opt for the “cousin” of terror, suspense, which also brings chilling and chilling content. , but always focusing on real elements and leaving aside the supernatural content of fantasy. The Nightmare Alley fits into this aspect, directed by Guillermo del Toro (speaking of the filmmaker). The super production is based on a classic book, written by William Lindsay Gresham, and had already been brought to the screens in 1947, in a film called here The Alley of Lost Souls. Now, in a smash hit version for adults, with jaw-dropping photography and art direction, del Toro tells the story of a con man who rises in life by cheating and taking money from naive and unsuspecting people. But ambition will soon be his downfall. The cast is equally impressive, led by Bradley Cooper, Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara.

It’s a good dud for those who don’t like very scary movies and prefer something lighter when celebrating Halloween. Not that Freaky doesn’t have its share of scares and more violent and gory scenes. The “terrier” is written and directed by Christopher Landon, who has specialized in the subgenre, blending horror and comedy satisfyingly in hit films such as How To Survive A Zombie Attack and both Death You. congratulate. And if in the last city the filmmaker mixed slasher with the rehearsal films of the time, here he creates an adolescent horror mixed with body swapping films. In the plot, a preppy teenager ends up switching places with a serial killer in Jason’s best style.

It was this film that secured the spot for directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett to helm the fifth film in the Scream franchise, released this year. But not only that, but also its direct sequel, Scream 6, which the filmmakers are finalizing for release in 2023. Blood Wedding is creative horror, which also reserves a certain sour humor in the form of satire. The plot follows Grace, the great Samara Weaving, on her happiest day, her marriage to Alex (Mark O’Brien). However, the family tradition wants a game before the wedding night. So what was supposed to be bliss becomes a struggle for survival when Grace, wedding dress and all, is stalked by her new “family” of psychopaths.

Forget Glass (2019), the so-called conclusion to M. Night Shyamalan’s “saga” that turned out to be some serious bullshit. And focus on that Split, one of the filmmaker’s finest efforts in the genre, showing the world he’s got his form back. Even with the Corpo Fechado (2000) connection at the end, Fragmented is its own movie, and it’s best thought of that way, with an independent beginning, middle, and end. Tour de force by James McAvoy, the film features the actor playing several characters, all personalities emerging from the mind of the same type, an extremely problematic individual. Some of their personalities are criminals and kidnap three young men.

For fans of It (2017) and its hugely successful sequel, it’s worth knowing about Argentinian filmmaker Andy Muschietti and star Jessica Chastain’s first work together – and it took place here in this tale. Gothic, which has a production by Guillermo del Toro (him again!). When he released this horror, Chastain already had two Oscar nominations under his belt, which raised the film’s status and brought attention to itself. In the plot, she plays a rocker, a woman with a radical and alternative lifestyle, who must take care of her boyfriend’s two little nieces when her brother dies. It turns out that the girls lived alone in an abandoned house for some time, under the care of an entity known as Mama. And the creature will come after the girls, as we know the past of the entity.

There was some hype for the release of this Jennifer’s Body (in the original title) in theaters, this because at the time the name of the star and protagonist of the feature, Megan Fox, was simply one of the hottest in Hollywood, thanks to the resounding success of the Transformers movies. When the movie actually opened up, well, let’s just say the hype died down significantly due to the outcome. In any case, it only took a few years later, maybe ten years after its release, for Hellgirl to be rediscovered and adopted by a new generation, becoming a cult work. Also, of course, a good choice for Halloween. In the plot, Fox and Amanda Seyfried are very different high school best friends. Fox is the popular hottie, while Seyfried is the shy nerd. The dynamic of their friendship changes dramatically when Fox is sacrificed for a budding rock band in order to achieve stardom, becoming a man-eating demon in the process. Which is never good.
