What’s new, dear cinephile ?! – Our interview column | Part 30: Luciano Vidigal

The beauty of cinema is being able to see beyond what the eye can capture. Talking about cinema is a beautiful proof of love for the feeling of curiosities that afflict this immense world in which we live. Every type of film, of every genre, seeks the important link in the presentation of emotions to the viewer, whoever they are. Thinking better to understand the reasons why cinema is such a rich thing for our existence as human beings, this eternal young cinephile who writes to you has sought out cinephiles across Brazil (some even in the world) to tell you a bit of their cinematic trajectory for you.

Our interviewee today is a drama teacher, actor, filmmaker and good people. Luciano Vidigal, is also a professor at the NGO Nós do Morro and has directed a short film in festivals in São Paulo, Londrina, Rio de Janeiro and Marseille. Fan of Spike Lee, this great artist of our audiovisual industry is now answering our questionnaire / interview on cinema.

1) In your city, what is your favorite cinema in relation to the programming? Detail the reason for the choice.

All cinemas in Estação de Cinema. They show rare, diverse and contemplative films. And that forms a beautiful partnership offering free tickets to the artists of Nós do Morro.

2) What is the first movie that you remember seeing and thinking: the cinema is a different place.

Do the Right Thing by Spike Lee. It took me.

3) Who is your favorite director and his favorite movie?

Spike Lee, do the right thing rs rs.

4) What is your favorite national film and why?

Pixote by Hector Babenco. A masterpiece. Cinema of authentic reality. And it is the film that made me love Brazilian cinema.

5) What does being a movie buff mean to you?

Sleep and wake up to the cinema. It means being a spectator who watches the film with a sacred eye.

6) Do you think that most of the theaters you know have programs made by people who understand cinema?

No. Unfortunately, capitalism is screaming louder. Advertising goes beyond art.

7) Will theaters ever end?

I have this fear. But I am optimistic and I believe we will resist.

8) Indicate a movie that you think many haven’t seen but which is great.

Brazil’s Denial by Joel Zito Araújo. An important opportunity to rethink Brazil.

9) Do you think movie theaters should reopen before we have a covid-19 vaccine?

Yes, with all the precautions. Why did shopping centers and bars open? And have they cleaned up the beaches? And the theaters, right? They are afraid of culture.

10) How do you see the quality of Brazilian cinema today?

I feel proud. Digital cinema offers a diversity that Brazil does not have. Even with this coup de grace of complex Brazilian politics, we have been selected, awarded and sworn by major festivals like Cannes and Berlin.

11) Tell the Brazilian artist that you don’t miss a movie.

12) Define cinema with a sentence:

Cinema rediscovers and communicates with the world through images.

13) Tell an unusual story that you witnessed in a movie theater

A couple having sex in the corner of the room. And on the screen the film “Gasparzinho, o Fantasminha Camarada”.

14) Define “ Cinderela Baiana ” in a few words …

“It was bad.”

15) Many directors are not movie buffs. Do you think that in order to make a film, a filmmaker has to be a cinephile?

Yeah! Reference is everything.

16) You are a filmmaker. What advice would you give to young people who want to make cinema a career in the future?

Have your cause, have the curiosity of knowledge, have psychology, love poetry, learn to unlearn. Cinema is not only to entertain, it is to revolutionize …
