George Segal of ‘the Goldbergs’ comedy dies at 87

Actor George Segal, known for playing “Pops” in the comedy “The Goldbergs” for the past eight seasons, has died at the age of 87.

He also starred in the classic comedy “Just Shoot Me!”.

“Our family is devastated to announce that George Segal has passed away from complications from his bypass surgery,” the artist’s wife, Sonia, said in a statement. Its manager, Abe Hoch, added: “I am sad because my close friend and longtime client has passed away. I miss your humor, your camaraderie and your friendship. He was an extraordinary human being.

Over the course of six decades, Segal has appeared in productions on Broadway, in theaters and on television. He received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” (1966).

Entitled Bever-le, the next episode of “The Goldbergs” will air on March 31st.

The series was created by Adam F. Goldberg and is based on memories from his own childhood.

The plot shows the reality of the 80s through the eyes of a preteen. The patriarch of the family is the cranky Murray, married to overprotective Beverly. Her two eldest children are Erica and Barry. The youngest son, Adam, documents his family life with his video camera. Beverly’s father, Albert “Pops” Solomon, is always there to give advice or help his grandchildren (usually unbeknownst to his daughter).

The cast includes Wendi McLendon-Covey, Jeff Garlin, Sean Giambrone, Troy Gentile, Hayley Orrantia and Patton Oswalt.
