How to Banish Brassy Blonde Hair at Home

Published

on

Brassy tones can come up in dyed or natural blonde hair. They’ll include shades of yellow, orange, or even red, that can spoil the icy bright blonde that had on the first day of coloring our hair.

Brassiness in blonde hair can be incredibly frustrating, but they are manageable. Below are some things you can do to banish brassy tones and get your hair looking salon-fresh again.

Use a blonde hair glaze

Using a hair glaze for blondes is one of the best ways of banishing any brassy tones in your blonde hair. A hair glaze designed for blonde hair may have purple tones which neutralize any yellow shades, leaving your icy blonde bright and fresh.

Hair glaze can also nourish the hair, acting as a deep conditioning treatment. This is especially important for dyed blonde hair, as the bleach can dry out hair and leave it brittle. Nourishing the hair with a glaze will help to keep hair healthy and shiny.

Use color-safe hair products

You should make sure the shampoo and conditioner you frequently use have been designed for use on dyed blonde hair. Regular hair products can cause hair color to fade, which can accelerate how quickly brassy tones appear in blonde hair.

Hair products designed for dyed hair will help to keep the color vibrant and fresh and reduce how quickly it fades. You can usually find shampoo and conditioner for blonde hair that will help to maintain your color.

Use a shower filter

The water coming from your shower can contain mineral deposits, that include chlorine and iron, that can make your hair brassy. This can happen to both dyed hair and natural blonde locks.

To combat this, you could install a shower filter, which will remove the sediments that can affect your hair color. It will change hard water to soft water, which will be much kinder to your hair and also your skin. It will prevent the minerals found in hard water from changing the color of your blonde hair and adding in any unwanted tones.

Keep hair protected from the sun

While the sun can naturally lighten our hair, and add natural highlights, the UV-rays can also be damaging, especially for blonde hair. The sun can cause dyed hair to fade in color and vibrancy and can turn icy blonde and platinum shades brassy.

When you’re out in the sun, you should keep your hair protected. You can get an SPF spray or serum for your hair, which will keep it safe from harmful UV-rays. You can also keep your hair in the shade by wearing a hat or hair scarf.

Keep hair protected when swimming

Swimming in different types of water can take a toll on blonde hair. Chlorine is notorious for being bad to blonde locks. Not only can it dry hair out by stripping away the natural oils, it can also cause blonde hair to fade, and turn brassy or even green-tinged.

Salt water can also cause damage to the hair, drying it out and fading the vibrant blonde shades. Wherever you’re swimming, you should use a swimming cap to protect your hair. If you don’t have a swimming cap, make sure to rinse your hair thoroughly after swimming, so no chemicals or salt remains on your locks. You could also use a leave-in hair mask that’s been designed to use when swimming.

Wash your hair less often

Washing your hair will cause the color to fade, which will leave brassy tones instead of the coveted icy bright blonde. Washing your hair less could help to maintain your hair color and keep it fresh and free of brassy tones.

There is no correct answer for how often you should wash your hair – it will depend on your lifestyle and your hair type. Usually, it’s best to not wash your hair every day and instead aim for two or three times a week.
