‘Black Panther 2’: Ryan Coogler explains why Talokan makes more sense than Atlantis in the sequel

Published

Played by Tenoch Huerta, Prince Namor finally made his MCU debut in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.”

Unlike the comics, he is not the ruler of Atlantis, but of Talokan, an underwater kingdom inspired by the Mayan culture, one of the pre-Columbian civilizations that populated the region of Mexico.

While the change is welcome given the originality it gave the character and its inhabitants, fans wonder why Marvel Studios decided to change the name and character of the House of Namor.

In an interview with Screen Rant, director Ryan Coogler said the following:

“I love ‘Aquaman’ and I absolutely loved Disney’s ‘Atlantis: The Lost Kingdom’, which debuted when I was much younger. And I wanted to do something that could sit in the pantheon cinematic alongside those movies. I wanted to do something true to that mythology, but still something different. We were looking for something that felt real and real, and we were able to have a great cultural immersion while exploring the Mayan culture It felt true to the theme, as if Talokan belonged to a world as believable as Wakanda, but at the same time, that it was something worthy of the mythos, something people could dream of.

Speaking to Variety, Huerta also addressed the subject and offered her thoughts on the change.

“It’s important that people feel represented in the cinema. And this change was made with great respect for the Mesoamerican culture, especially the Mayan culture. It is the root of almost everyone in Latin America. We have indigenous roots, we have black roots, we have white roots, but it’s fantastic to be here and represent that kind of ethnicity. I think this film gives us the right proposition to do so.

When asked if Namor would be considered a villain, the star replied:

“He’s a guy who protects his people, his culture, everything that matters in his kingdom. From my point of view, everyone in the world can relate to that. I don’t know if he’s a bad guy or just a guy who tries to protect what he loves, no matter the cost.”

Directed by Ryan Coogler, the sequel also stars Letitia Wright, Angela Bassett, Winston Duke, Lupita Nyong’o, Martin Freeman, Danai Gurira and Michaela Coel.

Check out the trailer and synopsis:

“In “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”, Queen Ramonda (Angela Bassett), Shuri (Letitia Wright), M’Baku (Winston Duke), Okoye (Danai Gurira) and the Dora Milaje (including Florence Kasumba) fight to protect your nation from the intervening powers of the world after the death of King T’Challa. As the Wakandans struggle to embrace their next chapter, the heroes must unite with the help of Nakia (Lupita Nyong’o) and Everett Ross (Martin Freeman) to chart a new path to the kingdom of Wakanda. Featuring Tenoch Huerta as Namor, king of a secret undersea nation, the film also stars Dominique Thorne, Michaela Coel, Mabel Cadena and Alex Livanalli.

The first “Black Panther” was released in 2018 and made a huge box office boom, grossing over $1.3 billion worldwide. Additionally, it became the first superhero film to be nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars.
