James Cameron is one of cinema’s most visionary directors, having directed for years the highest-grossing film in history: ‘Titanic’. After revolutionizing cinema with ‘Avatar’, the film that popularized 3D cinema, the director embarked on an unbridled journey to make four simultaneous sequels in the most ambitious project in cinema history. The director was given a budget of US$1 billion to make the four productions, which had never been imagined before. And surprisingly: the value is considered cheap given the rumored budget for the first film, which was said to be around $500 million.
James Cameron says the ‘Avatar’ sequel has been delayed again. Originally slated for this year, the blockbuster had already been pushed back to 2016, and is now pushed back and not expected to be released until late 2022.
‘Avatar’ has the biggest grossing figure in movie history: $2.8 billion. It cost the absurd sum of 500 million dollars, between the film’s budget and the marketing actions. The value is by far the highest in Hollywood cinema.
‘Avatar 2 to 5’ will be filmed simultaneously.
The role of protagonist Jack Sully was even offered to Matt Damon (‘The Bourne Ultimatum’) and Jake Gyllenhaal (‘Prince of Persia’) and both declined.
James Cameron, who has always viewed ‘Avatar’ as the creation of a new world and a new mythology, will begin work on the scripts in early 2011, with plans to begin production later in the year. .
“In the second and third films, each with a beginning, a middle and an end, but contributing to the development, to the evolution of the story as a whole, we will not slow down the pace of visual innovations nor the intensity emotional story of AVATAR, and we will continue to explore its themes and characters, which have touched the hearts of audiences in all cultures around the world. I can’t wait to return to Pandora, a world where we can let our imaginations run wild,” Cameron said.
