Ryan Coogler Talks Introducing A New Black Panther After Chadwick Boseman’s Death

It’s been two years since the death of Chadwick Boseman brought the world to a halt and caught us completely off guard – while putting a question mark over the future of the “Black Panther” saga in the MCU. After all, Marvel Studios had said it wouldn’t be recasting T’Challa’s role in the sequel, prompting execs to introduce a titular new hero.

At the premiere of ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’, director Ryan Coogler spoke about this complicated decision and once again honored Boseman’s legacy.

“It’s complicated, it’s complicated,” he said in an interview with Deadline. “What I will say is that Chadwick was always pushing things forward while being aware of what was going on behind him. This concept is one of the things that I still hold onto in terms of the lessons it taught me. He was also very brilliant at understanding moments, understanding the moment he was in. So that’s what I was trying to do, I was trying to channel it through this process. Understanding that we had to move on even though we had physically lost it. He was a giant man, the screen couldn’t contain him. To watch his films is to know only a part of him. We feel so lucky to have known you and we try to honor you. [na sequência]”.

Current box office analysis is that the sequel will gross AT LEAST $175 million in its opening weekend (November 11-13) in the US alone. These projections are considered conservative, as Marvel Studios and Disney have yet to begin major promotional and marketing efforts for the film.

The original film opened to $202 million in the United States in February 2018, breaking records. It ended up grossing $1.34 billion worldwide and transformed Chadwick Boseman’s T’Challa – and the kingdom of Wakanda – into some of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s biggest milestones.
