Plans for the coronation of King Charles, scheduled for May 6, 2023 at Westminster Abbey in London, are well advanced. The ceremony is expected to be shorter and less extensive than that of his mother, Queen Elizabeth. But the new king chose to follow another tradition, actively involving Prince William in the organization.
Fans of royal affairs, indeed, will remember Prince Philip’s pivotal role in planning the coronation ceremony for his wife, Queen Elizabeth. In fact, between 1952 and 1953, it was the Duke of Edinburgh who took over the event, making very significant changes.

But doing the same for Carlo will not be his wife Camilla, who on this occasion will receive the crown of queen consort. Seventy years after the last coronation, in fact, it will be up to the Prince of Wales, Charles’ eldest son, William, to assist the Sovereign in a similar capacity. And, according to the news reported by the British media, it seems that he has big plans in this regard.
William’s special role in the coronation of King Charles
Prince William partly shares the vision of the monarchy of his father Charles, but will help and support him in everything, starting with the coronation. The Mirror has indeed reported that the Prince of Wales would be particularly keen for the ceremony to avoid any “archaic, feudal or imperial” elements and represent a modern Britain. The intention is to reflect English society, the world of the Commonwealth and Great Britain in a new key.

The well-known tabloid reports that “the planning process will represent the first time an heir will take an active role in a three-generation coronation.” Charles, in fact, was present at Queen Elizabeth’s coronation, but he certainly wasn’t involved in her planning. After all, he was only four at the time. The same thing happened with the accession to the throne of King George VI, who received the crown when Princess Elizabeth was eleven years old.

Buckingham Palace has yet to officially share the names of the coronation committee members. But the name of Prince William seems to be at the top of the list. The heir to the throne is also considering how to participate in the event. The ceremony, indeed, although in a short form, will have to reflect many themes and underline the priority of certain members of the royal family. However, all this must be done with a view to a more fluid and modern organization of the event. Guillaume, in whom King Charles seems to have placed his full trust, will take care to marry tradition and modernity.
