According to information from The Hollywood Reporter, Jeff Goldblum is in talks to play the Wizard of Oz in ‘Wicked’, an adaptation of the famous Broadway musical.

The feature film, which stars Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, follows the friendship story between Elphaba (Erivo), the Wicked Witch of the West, and Glinda (Grande), the Good Witch of the South. Jonathan Bailey will also be in the cast.

Directed by Jon M. Chu, who directed ‘In a Neighborhood of New York’, with Marc Platt (‘La La Land: Singing Seasons’) producing. Winnie Holzman is on the screenplay and Stephen Schwartz on the musical composition.

In an official statement, director Jon M. Chu (“Crazy Rich Asians”) explained why the adaptation will be split into TWO parts.

“As we developed the adaptation, it became clear that it would be impossible to tell the story of ‘Wicked’ in one film. As we tried to cut out characters and songs, these decisions began to compromise the source material that had captivated us for so many years. So, we decided to make TWO movies! With more space, we’ll be able to tell the story of ‘Wicked’ as it should, with more more depth and surprises in the journey of these beloved characters.

The director also promised that the films will feature a “fantastic, animated universe full of dynamic characters” that will appeal to both fans of the musical and viewers unfamiliar with the source material.
