Today, fans were taken aback by the public news that Scarlett Johansson was chasing Walt Disney.
The reason? Her contract for ‘Black Widow’ contained a clause that the film would hit theaters and the actress would earn a percentage of the box office.
The studio has decided to release the film simultaneously on Disney +, via Premiere Access (whose film costs R $ 69.60), to increase the number of subscribers on the platform. Other studios are doing the same thing, like Warner and HBO Max, but this renegotiation has to be done with the actor, like Warner did with Patty Jenkins and Gal Gadot.
But Disney and Marvel couldn’t come to a deal with Johansson, who, despite earning a salary of $ 20 million, was awaiting a box office commission. The handset is not expensive.
Disney’s reaction to the process has not been the best. Rather than a friendly reaction, the studio insisted it disagreed with the actress’ decision to assert her rights.
In an official statement, the studio said:
“There is no merit in this process. The process is particularly sad and heartbreaking in its relentless disregard for the disastrous and lingering global effects of the Covid-19 pandemic. Disney has fully fulfilled Ms. Johansson’s contract, and furthermore, the release of Black Widow on Disney + with Premier Access has dramatically increased its ability to earn additional compensation on top of the $ 20 million it has received so far. She said. official notice.
The actress’ legal team released the following statement:
Enjoy watching:
“Disney intentionally caused Marvel to break contract, without justification, to prevent Ms. Johansson from enjoying the full benefits of her Marvel deal.”
Johansson failed to renegotiate with the studio.
“It’s no secret that Disney is releasing movies like Black Widow directly on Disney + to increase the number of subscribers and thus increase the company’s share price – and that it is hiding behind Covid-19 as a pretext for it, “he told the actress’ attorney John Berlinski, told CNBC.
“But ignoring the contracts of the artists responsible for the success of their films in favor of this short-sighted strategy violates their rights and we hope to prove it in court. This certainly won’t be the last time Hollywood talent faces Disney and makes it clear that regardless of what the company claims, it has a legal obligation to honor its contracts.
It was recently revealed that Gal Gadot and Patty Jenkins received around $ 10 million each after Warner decided to stream “Wonder Woman 1984” simultaneously.
News of the process should emerge in the coming days.
In the meantime, Disney + subscribers will be able to watch “Black Widow” at no additional cost starting August 25.
