In the last period, we have often heard about a well-known and very popular brand in the market, which was accused of being of poor quality. This whole situation inevitably leads consumers all over Italy and beyond to no longer know how to choose which is the highest quality brand of tomato sauce (since they can no longer rely on the brand). Currently, there is a brand that is the favorite of all, but the main problem remains quality, that is, whether all the necessary checks have been carried out during the production processes. However, first of all, it must be checked whether Italian tomatoes have been used and not semi-finished or concentrated tomatoes or even worse if they are imported from abroad.
Here is how we can do to understand if the tomato used in the supply chain is really of Italian origin or not. First of all, the first factor to consult is the label, which must be the most transparent testimony to the quality of the product, in the sense that it must provide all the necessary and obviously truthful information both on the origin and on the ingredients that are used during the production process. . After consumer categories discovered the shocking news that it was a famous tomato sauce from a well-known brand labeled “100% Italian tomato” or “100% Tuscan tomato”, which in reality was a semi-finished product and tomato concentrate product from abroad.
So, as it should be, a great and heated debate has opened up on this issue. This sauce scandal has brought to light something that we didn’t care much about anymore, namely how important it is to pay close attention to the food products that we bring to our tables every day. The scandal sparked research on other equally well-known brands, with the aim of testing the reality of the information reported on the labels.
These tests mainly looked for the presence of harmful substances, such as pesticides or simply the presence of excess water. The results were really disappointing, as all the tomato sauces only reached the sufficient minimum. Despite this, in rare cases there are more or less excessive differences in the products that leave room for a ranking of the best and the worst tomato purees and it is enough to think, in the last place of the ranking, that there had precisely that well-known brand Italian that we were talking about at the beginning of the article and that started the scandal.
