Tragedy evoked in Cagliari, the Aula Magna of the University collapses: no injuries

The tragedy affected the University of Cagliari: last night the Aula Magna of the Faculty of Languages ​​collapsed. No one was hurt because there was no one in the building, although a class had taken place a few hours earlier.

On the spot, the firefighters helped by dogs and drones, found no trace that could suggest the presence of someone left under the rubble.

The area has been secured and it is likely that all buildings in the complex will be inspected.

According to initial reconstructions, the students left the building which was closed at 8:00 p.m. The collapse occurred around 9:50 p.m. in the building behind the main entrance of the complex which houses the faculties of humanities and the ‘Aula Magna of the Faculty of Geology.

What remains of the building

Of the building, only the lower part of the facade and the load-bearing columns that held the structure attached to another C-shaped building, where the company’s kindergarten was also built, remained standing. The building is located inside the university center in via Trentino-via Is Mirrionis, where the university canteen and the student residence are also located.

The mayor: “We do a lot of checks on the buildings”

“We must understand the causes before drawing a hypothetical conclusion – said the mayor of Cagliari Paolo Truzzu – we carry out many checks on the buildings and despite this they are never enough: today we have to thank that this collapse has took place late in the evening when classes were already over”.

Today the student demonstration in the Rectorate

The students of the Reset Unica collective announced a demonstration at the rectorate at 10:30 am today, Tuesday October 10th.

The rector: “No sign that what happened can be verified”

“There was no sign of what had happened. The buildings of our Faculties are inspected regularly”. Then at Ansa Francesco Mola, rector of the University of Cagliari. hours, then they left. Then, as usual, all the buildings are inspected and, once it is found that there is no one inside, they are closed”.

At Unione Sarda, the rector explains: “I don’t remember when the last check was carried out but these are routine activities carried out by the investment management and the reports are triggered even in the presence of a small infiltration” .
