Tips on What to Look for When Buying an E-bike

Published

on

E-bikes have proven to be more advantageous than conventional bikes regarding longer commutes. They offer the convenience of surpassing other riders effortlessly and climbing hills.

However, with several available options, selecting one can be challenging, especially if you consider the different types of e-bikes for almost every riding preference. Here are nine valuable tips on what to consider when purchasing an e-bike

  1. Consider Your Needs

You must know your needs so that it will quicken your search process. Think about where and when you’ll use the bike. Electric commuters or city bikes are good choices if you mainly use flat urban roads.

But if you intend to purchase one for sport and fitness, electric mountain bikes are ideal for rough and uneven terrain. Once you know this, you can choose from different types, such as hybrid, mountain, and e-cargo bikes.

  1. Determine the Size

To enjoy a comfortable ride, choose the correct size e-bike. You can ride or get on and off the bike easily by buying one that fits properly. If you need more clarification, ask the retailers what size they recommend.

You can also fine-tune the seat height, examine how the handlebars are positioned, and test the e-bike before buying it.

  1. Consider the Weight

An e-bike’s overall weight generally determines the weight you’ll be pushing around. While you need more strength to ride a heavy bike, lighter bikes require less effort.

The weight of e-bikes ranges from 18 to 70 pounds, with the most being around 45-55 pounds. Although choosing the weight depends on the motor used, picking an e-bike within the range will ensure a more robust and lighter bike.

  1. Battery size and power

When looking for an e-bike, considering the life and power of the battery is very important. For long rides, choose a model with an extended battery life.

When it comes to your ebike’s battery size, selecting the best battery quality and size is essential based on your budget.

  1. Hub Motor and Mid-range

Choosing between a mid-range and hub motor is one of the most important decisions any rider can make. While Hub motors are located on the front or rear wheel, they power the bike.

Contrary to this, mid-range motors are fitted into the frame between the pedals, and they work by increasing the power of your pedal. While there is a slight difference between them, it’s essential.

  1. Maintenance

Like all other machines, e-bikes may need repair and maintenance at one point or another. This means you need to choose a motor that can be easily serviced and maintained.

If you choose a bike without a name brand, some shop mechanics may fail to repair it because it lacks diagnostic tools or spare parts. Your best bet is to choose bikes that use motors from well-known brands.

  1. Assist Type

The e-bike can be throttle or pedal-assisted. The primary distinction is that you can ride without pressing the pedals once the motor is on. There are also three classes of electric bikes: class 1, elegance 2, and class 3.

Unlike class 1 e-bikes, category 2 has throttle and pedal assist capabilities.

Unlike Class 1 e-bikes, Category 2 has throttle and pedal assist functions. However, Class 3 only has a pedal assist function. So, your local e-bike regulations and bike speed will determine your options.

  1. Budget

While specific e-bike models cost less than $1,000, if you want high-end models, prepare to pay more. This way, you can get a high-quality e-bike model, which is typically lighter, provides more features, and has longer battery life.

It’s also best to research well while looking for a reliable brand. Plus, consider your budget and the features or specs you seek.

  1. Think About the Accessories

Just like a car or a motorbike, there are several things that you must have if you own an e-bikes. Since e-bikes such as GRUNDIG Bikes can get punctures, you need to have different accessories to repair them. It’s also recommended that you have a battery system, an actual motor, and a set of lights to help you during repair.

  1. Offline or Online Purchase

Unlike online buying, purchasing a bike from a physical shop allows you to test whether it fits your needs. A shop also gives you a place to take your bike for repairs since even repairing a flat tire on an e-bike is more challenging than a traditional bike.

Moreover, you can save money by buying from a physical shop. Before you buy online, ensure that the product is from a well-known, reputable firm with at least some warranty.

Conclusion

With new e-bikes with different prices and configurations continuing to be launched in the market, you need to consider the above factors when looking for one. Apart from your needs, think about the bike’s size, weight, and performance.
