We speak of the tomato as the emperor of all the gardens in the world and in fact, the tomato, due to its benefits and beneficial properties, has climbed the ranking of the “best” vegetables, thus winning the podium in a few years. Initially viewed with a suspicious eye for its fruits considered dangerous, the tomato, in the following years, was then greatly admired in botanical gardens and is today appreciated for its great malleability in the kitchen and for its properties in herbal medicine. Tomatoes are very rich in water, which constitutes more than 94%; carbohydrates, on the contrary, represent almost 3%, while proteins are calculated at around 1.2%.
The fibers are present at the level of 1% and, finally, the fats represent only 0.2% and for this reason the tomato has become the main food of all slimming diets and not. Tomatoes also contain good amounts of vitamins; we cite for example pro-vitamin A (in particular carotenoids, but also lycopene), ascorbic acid and vitamin E, which provide the vegetable with its known antioxidant and vitaminizing properties. There are also modest amounts of group B vitamins. Not indifferent is the mineral component composed of iron, zinc, selenium, phosphorus and calcium associated with citrates, tartrates and nitrates which act in synergy thus ensuring remineralizing and anti-radical properties .
However, the content of organic acids such as malic, citric, succinic and glutenin is also moderate, particularly useful for promoting digestion. Due to its medicinal properties, the tomato is a food often recommended for people with constipation, being a good intestinal stimulant; it is also recommended for diabetics given the poverty in sugars, hypertensive people (due to lack of salt), overweight people, people with gout, people with rheumatism or uremia and all those who don’t want to neglect their own health trying to keep it always on top.
Did you know that the properties of tomatoes are also used in cosmetics? By applying a mixture prepared with the mixture of tomato juice, glycerin and salt on the skin of the hands, they will be softer and smoother. Do not forget and know absolutely, many beauty masks are formulated with tomato extracts, very useful for their nourishing, firming and toning properties. This vegetable is also used to relieve acne and the application of a cream prepared from tomato is recommended.
