The symbol of the Democratic Party must remain as it is, “because it tells of the service rendered to Italy”. These are the words of the secretary Enrico Letta on the day of the national leadership of the party, in progress at the Nazarene.
Today, Thursday October 6, is the start day of the showdown for the Democrats, in which the mea culpa officially begins for the result of the 2022 political election, which ended in a landslide victory. of the centre-right and in particular of the Brothers of Italy.
The day after the vote, Enrico Letta, favorite of the electoral campaign, had announced his resignation from the secretariat of the Democratic Party and today the national leadership is heading towards the congress and towards change.
And while the candidates for the next DEM secretariat are considered, Letta said that the process towards the demolition of the party will have to be long, but not very long, announcing that he will accompany the Democratic Party towards the new course.
“You don’t need an X-Factor on names”
In fact, as he explains, the congress must have “the right timing, it shouldn’t be an X-Factor on the best secretary to do in forty days, but not even a congress that refers to Greek kalends . I would like the new management team to be in place with the start of the new spring. We have to start in March with a meaningful choice.”
Pd Congress, Letta: “A young woman will have to challenge Meloni”
“I thank all those who have asked me for a longer-term commitment, but I would consider this a mistake for you and for the party: I started my activism young, I was a minister in 98 and it is right that our party has a younger ruling class capable of challenging the government of Giorgia Meloni, a young woman.” A woman, he points out, could be the new leader of the Democrats.
“The few women elected are the failure of our representation”
Similarly, Letta says that the few women Pd elected are “the failure of our representation. It’s clear and obvious, I don’t have much to add, and it represents the meaning of a party that has not taken the necessary leap.
But now it is time to look to the future: “There is no turning back the clock on the need for women parliamentary group leaders. On the other hand, there will be the first female Prime Minister of the country and on this point we must be credible”.
