“ The Supreme Voice of the Blues ” became a critical and public success when it was released on Netflix last year and the production continues to win top awards of 2021 and has just received five Oscar nominations.
And among the nominations, actress Viola Davis was one of the winners in the Best Actress category, for her performance as acclaimed singer Ma Rainey.
On top of that, star Chadwick Boseman received a nomination for Best Actor and remains the overwhelming favorite of the 2021 edition of the award.
And with this recent nomination, Davis sets a historic record, being the black actress with the most Oscar nominations. In all, the star now has four nominations in the acting categories.
Viola also broke another record, being the only black actress to have two nominations in the Best Actress category.
The Oscar winners will be announced on April 25.
Directed by George C. Wolfe, “ The Supreme Voice of the Blues ” (Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom) is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning play written by August Wilson in 1982.
