The poorest tomato sauce brands on the market: these are the ones

After the scandal of a well-known and popular brand in the market, consumers got a little confused on how to choose the best brand of tomato sauce product to buy. At the moment there is a brand that, among all, is the favorite, but the main problem remains the choice of a brand that really uses Italian tomatoes and not semi-finished or concentrated products, even worse if they are imported from abroad. But how do you know if the tomato used in the sector is really of Italian origin?

Well, let’s say right away that the label must be the most transparent testimony to this, in the sense that it must provide all the truthful information both on the origin and on the ingredients used. Consumers after discovering that the tomato sauce of a well-known brand labeled “100% Italian tomato” or “100% Tuscan tomato” was in fact a semi-finished product and tomato concentrate from abroad, triggered great debate on this issue. The sauce scandal has highlighted how important it is to pay close attention to the food products we bring to our tables every day.

To test what is actually real in the information on the labels, sample tests were carried out between the most well-known and most traded brands. These tests mainly looked for the presence of pesticides and the presence of excess water. In the test that the experts carried out in the laboratory, all the tomato sauces reached at least the minimum sufficiency although, as in all cases, there are more or less excessive differences in the products that leave room for a classification of the best and worse tomato puree. At the bottom of the ranking, there was this well-known Italian brand that we were talking about at the beginning, what a scandal.

Even in the ranking that experts made in January 2020, which concerned tomato sauces, this brand was still in a rather unfavorable position. Among the parameters analyzed during the laboratory tests on the tomato sauces, the quality of the raw material used, the quantity of salt but also the presence of molds and pesticides could not however be missing. To make the test even more effective and objective, the taste test of the different products to be checked was also carried out by experts in the field.
