For a few weeks, a new currency has been issued on the market. Obviously, this comes from one of the busiest states when it comes to minting coins. We are talking about the Vatican City which, even towards the end of the year, amazes collectors and enthusiasts with truly interesting specimens. So this time we are not going to analyze old coins with an excessive value, but a new one which, if kept, can bring you a nice piggy bank.

The Vatican Mint has issued a new commemorative coin. This time the Vatican did it to commemorate the death of Saint Francis de Sales, considered the father of modern spirituality. Despite his university studies, the saint chose the path of the priesthood, even against his father’s wishes. Many remember him as a tireless priest. Failing to preach effectively during the liturgies, he devoted himself to the publication of tracts, which he posted on the walls or slipped under the doors of houses. When he became a saint, he was therefore nicknamed “patron saint of journalists”.

The Vatican Mint produced this coin in PROOF quality, it has a diameter of 21 mm and a weight of 6 g. On the obverse, you will notice a depiction of Saint Francis de Sales, created by artist Orietta Rossi, which reflects her tireless commitment to spreading Catholicism. During this period, Calvinism was very strong, which as we well know was a Protestant confession of Christianity, which spread around the 16th century. While behind his silhouette, we can see the posters through which he spread the word of God.

Along the edge is the inscription ‘CITTÀ DEL VATICANO’ which is interrupted by a few rays of sunlight. At the bottom, under the saint, there is engraved “SAN FRANCESCO DI SALES 1567-1622” and the face value “EURO 20”. While on the reverse we find in the center the heraldic coat of arms of Pope Francis, behind which again emerge the “manifestos” of Francis de Sales. Finally along the edge you will find the engraving “FRANCISCVS PM ANNO X-MMXXII”. While at the bottom there is the famous motto of Pope Francis “Miserando atque Eligendo”, in Italian “he looked on with mercy and chose him”.
