Elnaz Rekabi returned to Iran and was greeted at Tehran airport by the crowd who called her a “heroine”. However, the 33-year-old Iranian athlete who competed without a headscarf at the Asian Championships in South Korea had to backtrack to keep his family safe.
As her supporters cheered, Rekabi arrived at Imam Khomeini Airport in the Iranian capital wearing a black hooded jacket and baseball cap. Before speaking to the media, he had an interview with his relatives.
“Due to the situation in the final of the competition and the fact that I was called to compete when I was not expecting it, I found myself entangled in my technical equipment. That’s why I didn’t pay attention to the veil that I should have worn, ”the athlete told the press.
“I returned to Iran in peace, in perfect health and on schedule. I apologize to the Iranian people for the tensions that have arisen,” Rebaki added, concluding that he had “no intention of leaving the national team.”
