The last two years, between pandemics and war, have profoundly changed the habits of Italians. The theme related to solar time 2022 is really very close to the hearts of the Italian population, in a historical period like the current one, where the value of bills actually reaches incredibly high values, all possible methods are sought to be able to limit the maximum power consumption.
A remedy could be the removal of solar time 2022, indeed, as you well know, for several years now the last weekend of October has seen the time switch, with the anticipation of the time of summer. In other words, you have an extra hour of light in the morning, at the expense of the late afternoon (in fact, it starts to get dark very early).
The problem lies precisely in energy consumption, in fact anticipating darkness, the risk is to consume more energy at a time of day when there are many “active” people and open offices, which, according to the current proposal, is less likely for example at 6 am.

The concrete proposal is to abolish solar time, maintaining summer time throughout the year, which is happening in the Nordic countries and in France. The decision belongs to the government, because the European Union cannot do much about it, given the non-universality of the opinions of the member countries, or while it has been discussed in the past, a decision which would bring together all the world has not been members.
Because one of the remedies to fight against expensive bills and at least partially save the accounts of Italians is to permanently abolish solar time and keep summer time all year round.
According to Terna’s calculations, in the period between the end of March and the end of October (when solar time enters) of the last 15 years, savings of 10 billion kilowatt hours have been calculated. For the pockets of the Italians, this means 1.8 billion euros. And in 2022, the Italian state saved just under 200 million euros. In addition, CO2 emissions related to the use of electricity have also decreased considerably.
So on the night of October 29 to 30, 2022 we will not switch to solar time, maintaining summer time? Still too early to say even if the time to make an official decision is running out.
A first response came between 2018 and 2019. At that time, the European Commission had carried out a survey of more than 5 million Europeans. The absolute majority had chosen to abolish solar time, by a wide margin. Thus, in 2019, the European Parliament approved a legislative resolution to sanction the abolition of the time change from 2021.
