Snapchat’s Director Mode Will Feature Advanced Video Editing Tools

Snapchat is giving users more advanced video editing tools by rolling out a new feature called Director Mode.

It takes in features found on TikTok such as a green screen where users can record videos with a generated background.

It also takes inspiration from BeReal with a feature that takes photos and videos from both the front and back-facing camera.

“Director mode is a new set of camera and editing tools within Snapchat that make it easy to create polished content, or enhance everyday moments captured with our camera that grab the viewer’s attention,” the company writes in a press release.

“Within Director mode, creators can use our new Dual Camera capability that lets you use the front-facing and back-facing camera at the same time. We believe this will be a game changer for creators capturing moments around them. For the first time without any special camera tricks or secondary apps, creators can capture their reaction and their 360-degree perspective.”

It also includes a quick edit mode, allowing users to trim and splice multiple videos together. Editors will also be able to speed up or slow down their videos.

The new features are available starting today and are available on iOS and Android.

Spotlight

As noted by The Verge, Snapchat is trying to make a case for Spotlight, its TikTok-like feed. Much like Instagram is with Reels, Snapchat is trying to lure people away from TikTok and to its own platform

Snapchat launched a feature called Spotlight Challenges which rewards creators each week for making videos using specific Lenses, making videos on a specific subject matter, or playing a particular sound on a video.

According to a leaked memo from CEO Evan Spiegel, he wants 30 percent of Snapchatters to use Spotlight every day in 2023.

In the summer, PetaPixel reported that Snap laid off 20 percent of its staff, which equated to over 1,000 employees.

Last month, Snapchat rolled out a desktop version of its app, Snapchat for Web. The company initially launched Snapchat for Web in July to Snapchat+ subscribers in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. Now, the desktop version can be accessed by all Snapchat users.
