Rock Climber Captures Terrifying POV Footage of Bear Attacking Him

Published

on

A mountain climber wearing a GoPro attached to his helmet captured the moment he was attacked by a bear while descending a rocky ridge.

The terrifying incident took place on October 1 on Mount Futago near Chichibu City, Saitama Prefecture, Japan.

For the first minute of the video, the climber serenely descends the mountain before the black bear comes charging over the hell with the sun shining bright behind it.

The terrified climber immediately begins screaming and pushes it away as the bear snaps its jaws at the man.

After jumping and landing down past the climber the bear then charges up at the climber, who frantically hits it with clenched fists. The bear then comes again but this time the climber lands a savage kick on the bear’s head forcing it to retreat.

It’s after these wild scenes we see and hear a cub. Undoubtedly why the bear is so angry and keen to see off any threats against its young.

Upon Reflection

The entire episode was filmed on a GoPro HERO10 filming in 4K at 30fps. The anonymous climber reflected on the incident afterward.

“Instead of fear, I switched to the feeling that if it was coming, I had no choice but to face it,” he writes on YouTube.

He says that he screamed to intimidate the bear coupled with kicks and punches that were thrown in the beast’s direction. However, the climber accepted his role in the incident.

“Looking back at the video, it seems that the bear attacked me to protect the cub. I invaded bear territory, but since they attacked me, I defended myself with self-defense,” he writes.

The climber, who is a martial arts enthusiast, sustained minor injuries from “hammering” the rock and the bear.

“I learned karate when I was a child, but I liked mixed martial arts now, so maybe I could use hammer fists instead of punches,” he says.

“My hands were scratched and cut from desperately holding on to the rock. My right wrist was slightly sprained after hammering the rock and the bear.”

After the incident, the climber decided to ascend back to the summit where he “took a breather.” He returned down the same route but this time with no bear attacks.
