Robert Downey Jr. to star in new HBO series in partnership with A24

According to Variety, Robert Downey Jr.’s next work (“Avengers: Ultimatum”) will star in a new series on HBO in partnership with producer A24.

The project is also the result of an agreement with Rhombus Media in association with Cinetic Media and Moho Film.

Entitled “The Sympathizer”, the production will be an adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name, written by Viet Thanh Nguyen.

The book is a multicultural satire on the struggles of a half-French and half-Vietnamese Communist spy during the final days of the Vietnam War and his exile in the United States.

Downey is expected to play multiple roles in the series, each representing a branch of the U.S. corporate system, including a promising Orange County congressman, CIA agent, and Hollywood director.

In addition to playing the lead role, Downey will also be executive producer, with director Park Chan-wook (‘Oldboy’) also co-showrunner alongside Don McKellar (‘Exotic’).

“Adapting the important and masterful work of Mr. Nguyen requires a visionary team. With Director Park at the helm, I hope it will be a creative production adventure for Susan, me and the Downey team, and an exciting process for myself as I take on these complex side roles. The A24 and HBO are a perfect match for the kind of challenge I was craving and I think we will provide an exceptional viewing experience for our audience.

As of yet, there are no predictions for the start of filming, which will take place in Los Angeles and Vietnam.

It was also said that the production was looking for a predominantly Vietnamese cast for the series, including the lead role.

With the project only in its early stages, updates are expected to be released in the coming months.
