Best friends last a lifetime. But there are those good friends who are part of a certain period of our life and are fundamental to our development, but after that time they just become people we know, but who we don’t have as much with anymore. ‘privacy. And that’s okay, after all it’s life. This is what happened to the dear series “Friends”, which decided to organize a meeting of the main actors seventeen years after its end, like those famous meetings of seniors, where everyone meets as adults, as an old man, to talk about youthful antics. .
The first thing that jumps out at “Friends: The Reunion” is that it’s not a special episode directed by the cast – it’s not Phoebe, Chandler, Monica. , Rachel, Ross and Joey who get back together fifteen years later, with their teenagers, having to face new challenges at this stage of life. This is not the case. In ‘Friends: The Reunion’ we find Jennifer Aniston, Matt LeBlanc, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, David Schwimmer and Matthew Perry, but as actors they are, and who, like us, revisit the imagination of this series. When the reunion plan was announced, most fans thought they would find a fictional episode with the beloved characters, and it’s a bit disappointed when you realize that’s not quite what it is. we found in the special.
In 1h40 of duration we follow the six actors in the process of reconnecting with the world of ‘Friends’, but the result is not exactly glorious. It’s clear that the whole thing was directed by David Schwimmer or that he was just the most excited about it, as the script for the special focuses on him, the camera follows his reactions and the coolest behind-the-scenes stories that take place. finally shared with the audience are those who put him in the central role, like the behind-the-scenes footage of Ross and Rachel’s first kiss and the episode of Change, in which they try to climb a couch up the stairs.
If on the one hand the script seems to have been built on Ross, on the other hand he doesn’t seem to know what to do with Phoebe and Chandler. Lisa Kudrow gets a random scene playing guitar with Lady Gaga, who suddenly enters the special; Matthew Perry seems visibly uncomfortable with all of this – in fact, it seems like being there brings him more pain than joy. Courteney Cox, meanwhile, barely speaks on stage, so the spotlight turns to Ross, Rachel and Joey, who wear the special professionally.
The mix of footage from the show with behind-the-scenes footage from the moment of recording brings a pleasant nostalgia, interspersed with then-reality footage of actors returning to set and reuniting after so long. As the viewer hears testimonials from the creators of “Friends,” the cast picks up the text of iconic episodes again – and seeing “the magic at work” is truly a feast for fans. However, the whole part of the interview conducted by comedian James Corden is quite out of place, as much if not more than the so-called cameos, which appear to have been inserted just to attract more audiences – like BTS’s random testimony or the Justin Bieber and Cara Delevigne show.
‘Friends: The Reunion’ leaves a bittersweet taste in the mouths of fans. On the one hand, it’s good to see those old friends again, but when you find them again, you have a feeling that those good times from the past will never return and, therefore, it is better to recognize the importance of this series. for this period when was exposed only to try to save it and update it to contemporary. It was nice to see everyone again, but we’re not so good friends anymore.
