It’s easy to get lost in all the endless possibilities and paths we could have taken in our lives, when you think about how much a moment can redefine and reorient our future. This reflection, so existential and so natural to being human, turns into a new romantic drama on Netflix, titled How would Se8230;?. Exploring the two opposing journeys of a young college graduate, Wanuri Kahiu’s feature film offers an optimistic take on how a reckless or reckless choice can still turn into a flowery journey of self-discovery.
The essence of What if…? lies in the fact that even if some routes we follow are torturous and even impulsive, this does not mean that they will prevent us from becoming this best version of ourselves. And thanks to this premise, screenwriter April Prosser succeeds easily and immediately manages to win over the public. And here we see life unfold from the perspective of Lili Reinhart and her greatest dilemma: the possibility of an unexpected pregnancy at the height of her youth. For two hours, we follow two separate timelines, guided by your pregnancy test result. And in a dizzying spiral of change and newness, we see how dynamic life is and how we were made to adapt to all circumstances.
Not that this reflection is something new. But even though Prosser is based on an inauthentic and very basic narrative structure, the intensity and realism of Reinhart’s beautiful performance takes us to more hidden and sometimes even forgotten corners of our own souls – bringing that spark to the surface. which lights up again in us with the following question: “What would it be if…? “. And by naturally placing the audience in the same dilemma as the protagonist, the romantic drama becomes absolutely identifiable, with all its cliches, repetitive talk and mannerisms that replicate other romances and rom-coms from years past.

But the production’s biggest problem is its lack of a climax. With the plot unfolding in a linear fashion without major conflict, the end of the second act is jaded and does not cause more agonizing emotions in the audience. With no twists and turns, the drama feels more like a regular story and doesn’t offer anything out of the ordinary to justify its two-hour runtime. And at times, it’s easy to see that the feature would work much better as a 30-minute short. However, what if…? captivates us with its inspiring optimism and rocks us with a warm ending that reminds us that – no matter the circumstances – everything will be fine.
