Veteran actor Ralph Fiennes, who played Lord Voldemort in the ‘Harry Potter’ saga, has come to the defense of the books’ controversial author JK Rowling, criticizing those who curse and threaten her as ‘disgusting’ and “disgusting”.

“JK Rowling wrote these great books about empowerment, about young kids discovering themselves as human beings,” Fiennes told The New York Times.

“It’s about how you become a better, stronger, more morally-focused human being. The verbal abuse directed at her by these people is disgusting, it’s terrible,” he continued.

“I mean, I can understand a point of view that could go crazy from what she says about women. But he’s not some obscene far-right fascist. It’s just a woman saying, “I’m a woman and I feel like a woman and I want to be able to say I’m a woman.” And I understand where she is coming from. Even though I’m not a woman.”

Recalling that JK Rowling has suffered numerous death threats as well as abuse after speaking out on issues such as women’s rights and freedom of expression. Critics have accused her of being “anti-trans” and expressing sentiments considered harmful to the trans community.
