South African Breweries (SAB), one of the world’s largest beverage companies, recently announced a major investment in South Africa. This investment will help bolster the economy while creating jobs in Port Elizabeth, in a country that has been battling with a high unemployment rate.
The investment is part of an aggressive growth strategy that SAB has implemented to further expand its presence in the region. The money is used to develop new products, increase distribution networks, and add capacity to factories and production facilities. With this investment comes the promise of economic growth, employment opportunities, and improved infrastructure for communities across South Africa.
Founded in 1895, SAB has been instrumental in developing the South African economy and society.
The company is a leader in the production, marketing and distribution of beer, ready-to-drink beverages and other alcoholic beverages within South Africa and internationally. The company produces more than 200 brands, including popular local brands such as Castle Lager, Peroni Nastro Azzurro, Miller Genuine Draft and Carling Black Label.
The amount of R650m ($35m) capital expenditure is being invested into the expansion of the Prospecton Brewery in Durban, with R270m ($15m) being used to upgrade the Ibhayi Brewery in Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth). This investment alone will provide R3.1 billion ($163m) in additional tax revenue and generate 24 000 jobs throughout the full value chain.
The Weather is Great
Plus, the weather is usually good, though being a coastal city, it can be windy. Luckily it is primarily sunny so you can enjoy all of these activities year-round. The temperature typically varies from 47°F (8℃) to 80°F (27℃) and is rarely below 40°F (4℃) or above 86°F (30℃).
So Much to Do
There are many reasons why the quality of life in Port Elizabeth is so exciting. One of the main reasons is the outdoor life, whether you enjoy hiking, biking, fishing, or just walking around town.
Here are some of the exciting things to do in and around Port Elizabeth:
- Van Stadens Wildflower Reserve
- Kragga Kamma Game Park
- Shamwari Private Game Reserve
- Cape Recife Nature Reserve
- Addo Elephant National Park
- Kwantu Private Game Reserve
- Addo Zip Line

- Redhouse Flamingos
The scenery is beautiful, with 40km of white beaches to enjoy.
- The Boardwalk Casino & Entertainment World

- Horse Beach Riding
- Surf and Deep Sea Fishing
- Surfing
- Kite Surfing
- Summerstrand Beach
Sun, surf, beach, safaris, mountains and forests, there is something for everyone to enjoy. Being a smaller city, it is a lot slower paced than the larger cities in South Africa.
Why is Investment a Drawcard for Relocating?
Not only will it create thousands of jobs in Port Elizabeth, but it will also help to grow the economy. This is good news as South Africa has been struggling in recent years, especially since Covid 19.
The investment by SAB is a vote of confidence in the future of South Africa and foreign investors will see that the country has potential.
Jobs will increase exponentially with SAB’s investment and will have a positive impact on the unemployment rate in South Africa. This is a great example of how an investment by a large company can have a positive impact on the economy. This is also a sign of the growing economy in South Africa and the opportunities that are available to investors.
Is it Safe?
That is a big question. When it comes to cities, no matter where in the world, there will always be crime. PE is one of the safest cities in South Africa and as with most cities, you would just need to be aware of your surroundings. Don’t walk alone after dark in certain areas, ensure your car is locked and your handbag and valuables are in sight and safe.
Once you know the areas, then you can have a carefree environment to enjoy.
Possibilities
With a skills shortage in South Africa, there are over 100 fields of employment in demand, that cannot be filled by locals. Here are a few on the SA Government Critical Skills List:
- Software Engineer
- Network Administrator
- Data Scientist
- Health and Safety Manager
- Accountants
- Agricultural Engineer
