South African Breweries (SAB), one of the world’s largest beverage companies, recently announced a major investment in South Africa. This investment will help bolster the economy while creating jobs in Port Elizabeth, in a country that has been battling with a high unemployment rate.

The investment is part of an aggressive growth strategy that SAB has implemented to further expand its presence in the region. The money is used to develop new products, increase distribution networks, and add capacity to factories and production facilities. The company is a leader in the production, marketing and distribution of beer, ready-to-drink beverages and other alcoholic beverages within South Africa and internationally. The company produces more than 200 brands, including popular local brands such as Castle Lager, Peroni Nastro Azzurro, Miller Genuine Draft and Carling Black Label.

The amount of R650m ($35m) capital expenditure is being invested into the expansion of the Prospecton Brewery in Durban, with R270m ($15m) being used to upgrade the Ibhayi Brewery in Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth). This investment alone will provide R3.1 billion ($163m) in additional tax revenue and generate 24 000 jobs throughout the full value chain.
